Gotta a notch! Ideas please.

I'll be replacing my 93 hatch with a 92 notch. My plan is for a street/strip car. VERY lightweight. I'll be removing the rear seat and a/c for sure. May go AJE front end to lose more weight. Haven't decided on the smog stuff yet. What other ideas for losing weight? Seats and AL heads will go in as well.
I'm going with Welds for sure. I want Pro Stars but the extra expense of the 5lug conversion is holding me back. 15x4" infront 15x9's in back. 4" cowl glass hood. May even spring for the glass trunkc if theres allot of weight to be saved there.
Very small budget as my Cobra is getting the funds right now. The sale of the 93 will help get a paint job but I'll be saving the rest.

I would highly recommend the AJE components, as they are top notch. In addition to your other ideas, I would say upgrade the front brakes with a nice set that includes aluminum spindles (I believe baer has such a kit). This will compliment your tubular components nicely. From there, you pretty much only have body panels left. Hood, fenders, trunk, doors, etc. Smog pump elimination, as I recall, is good for about 20 pounds. It is not as dramatic as an a/c delete, but it certainly helps.

I have on my 93 SSP coupe full tublar front end with coil overs on mine with only power steering, water pump, alt and crank pully hooked up i also have a black majic elec. fan with a fluidyne alum radiator, along with tons of other stuff. My coupe weighted in at 2950 or so with a 1/4 tank of gas! My 92 coupe on the other hand is like 3500???? and it's a 4banger , the 80 coupe will be lighter then the 93 hopefully. Good luck peace

I'm up in the air on the motor. Thought about the stroked 392/398. Also thinkin about the 331 with a turbo but thats really expensive. The best thing I can come up with is a big inch stroker without all the options. I ran 500+ on my YS trimmed 302 for a long time with no problems. I may do the same with a 351 based stroker.
Surprised to see the 2950 weight. Is that with you in it? I was hoping for more of a loss. I'd like it to be 2900 with me in it,...if possible. I dont want to completely gut it so I may have to change my goals a bit. I had twin elec fans on my last 93 and loved the extra space. I'll be getting those again.
Is it worth getting the glass trunk?

I like to be different so i'd strip it down put an '03 cobra motor in it maybe a turbo kit and call it good. Well thats what i'd like to do with mine. All I need is to find an '03 cobra motor for cheep...hehehe

You don't have to go to any extreems to get the weight down, Nate's car is only about 2900lbs with him in it (he's 185lbs-ish) ready to race and it's still got the steel hood, stock suspension front and rear, factory 10-holes, etc.

That was w/o carpet or the plastic panels in the trunk but that's not much more.

It is worth it, if one is serious about hitting your car's weight goal without gutting the interior. It has been a while since I have held the trunk from a notch, but I think a fiberglass or cabon fiber trunk would be worth a savings of 25 pounds or so.

Sounds good so far. I need to get this beast weighed and see where I start. I'll be getting the paint redone first. Really bad shape. Then on to the suspension. I'll be on the lookout for a glass or CF 4" cowl hood and trunk lid.

My 89 4 banger notch is under 2700 lbs with my draglites on it. With the 96 cobra wheels I doubt its much over 2700. The only thing I really pulled out for weight was the insulation under the carpet and a few other little odds and ends (rearend dogbone, unused brackets here and there). But then there is also a little turbo and a front mounted intercooler so Im not sure I lost much.

Oh and btw, as for mods on the new notch. If you can weld and fabricate a bit go get a couple of T3 turbos and a set of shorty headers. Find ya a decent intercooler on ebay, get some mandrel bends, and twin turbo that sucka for under $1k.

All this notch discussion makes me want to buy the '85 my friend has. It needs a few new panels (the ones we mentioned) and a new passenger side floor pan. The trouble is, I don't have room to store it!

You're killin me! I remember those 2 cars. Way sweet setups.
I've decided on the motor. 302 based stroker, 331/337/347. I dont want the added expense of the 351 swap. More money to use for a possible turbo setup. Would love to get a 6spd too. Probably wont happen.

Well one thing you're going to want to keep in mind is stock blocks are very weak. If you are planning on doing a stroker and boost on a stock block you're just wasting money.
You can easily get to 450 rwhp with mere turbo boost and an intake. Heads make it even easier.
