Gotta a notch! Ideas please.

I'm very familiar with the 5.0. This will be my 3rd. The 1st was heavily modded. Just my first time leaning towards a strip car than a street setup. My last block had ARP head studs, DSS main support and o-rings haeds. It lasted a long time even on 15psi of boost. I'll be keeping the boost down till more money comes in. The turbo thing will be WAY down the line. I'll be runnin the stroker for a long time before it gets boosted.This isnt an unlimited budget.
 
You may want to look into the cost of the 351 based motor a bit closer, there really isn't much other than the Hood that would be more $$$ than a diecent 347 and it will be a TON more durable when/if you ever get the boost to it.
 
I'll be getting the 4" cowl anyway but the 351 headers, brackets, block, internals, intake, distributor, etc all adds up really fast. I'll put some numbers together but I've done this before when I was going to drop a 398 into my 1st 93. It was $1,000-$2k more. I bought my Cobra instaed!
 
Honestly if the budget is that tight then a stock crank 351 with good rods and some cheapie TRW dished pistons would be the ideal pre-turbo motor. It'll be every bit as strong as your 347 N/A, maybe a little heavier, and will hold up under 700+whp abuse with the boost. If you're serious about boost later I would NEVER EVEN CONSIDER any kind of stroked stock block 302. Loook at "The David" his car put down almost 470whp on baby boost (11psi) with a stock 5.0L short block and the $2k TFS top half kit right out of the box. 500whp would be CAKE, I'd bet money it would be WELL under 20psi and would filet the block like a salmon.

I totally agree. I have seen more 2 piece 5.0 blocks than I have fingers. A 351 based engine is a ton more durable blockwise. I just hate to see somebody put all that good stuff into a block and then boost it to take it to a limit they could have gotten to with just a stock 5.0.
 
biggest thing i noteced was remove any and all un nessecary weight,such as sound deadining,back seat,all vibration dampiners front bumper,the list is pretty long i weighed my car with me in it with about 1/4 tank and it came out to 2680 lbs with an estimated 250 hp i was able to trap at 107mph and run low 13s leaving off idel,due to street tires tractoin was a little bit of a problem.but a 351w all motor or a turboed 302 should suffice for some low 11s or high 10s as long as you decide you want to get crazy:nice:

Good points made too. I'll keep the wheels turnin on the motor ideas. I've got plenty of time since this wont be kicking off til next winter. I hope to have the paint and body done by winter and the drivetrain/suspension during winter. We'll see. Budget is not set. I just want to keep it down.

btw - You guys know who makes those AN fittings that are anodized titanium instead if red/blue? Saw them on tv.
 
Nate had pretty good luck with his low-buck special, just light weight and some suspension tuning, then like a 100 shot I think. He was down in the low 12s if I remember right.

Jeff went like 11.2 in his with the little motor and a shot, just real light weight, and good suspension set-up.

Those are real simple combos, just light weight and some tuning, then like a 100 or 150.

Either one of them could have really stepped it up with a 393 and the spray....

I saw someone above mention a turbo motor.... the sky is the limit there. I mean look at Eric, he ran what, like low 9s last year and will probably be in the 8s this year.

If its a dedicated track car, you have some real advantages, cuz you can pull out extra stuff that street guys cant (usually). Smog pumps, cats, spare/jack, stereo, window mechanism, quad shocks, heater, rear bumper bracing, etc... Plus you can optomise the gear ratio and tire size for exactly 1320, that alone is worth a couple tenths.

One thing for sure, no spray. N/A, turbo or blower. Another is the goal will be for mid 10s. Quad shocks will be gone, along with spare jack and tire, cats, rear seat, a/c, stock hood and trunk and stock wheels. I'll be running Weld Pro Stars with bigs and skinnies. I'll at least get into the motor. Power adder is still up in the air. The biggest thing, due to cost, will be the weight. Mostly free. Then suspension. Keep the ideas and knowledge flowing. :nice:

Ya, No N20!! I went 12.99 with the stock motor, about 2900 w/me in it, Never got a real good pass with the n20. But did go 12.44 @ 111mph with a 150 shot with no traction. Nitrous is:nonono: :nonono: :nono:
 
Well after finishing up my nitrous install on my Cobra I really dont like the idea of constatly filling the bottle. I mean I didnt like the idea before the install but theres such a huge gain on these Cobras when you spray them. I really enjoy having plenty of power to begin with, all the time and a turbo/blower is the only way to go. Still kickin around ideas. Think I've got the color chosen thouggh. Its an Infiniti color called Beryllium(sp?). Basically a dark gray/brown mix. Will really look greay with the smoked head/tail lights I have in mind. I was also kicking around the idea of the black chrome finish on the Prostars but its going to cost too much so regular chromies will have to do.
