shifting normally into 3rd is fine, even slightly quick. Although, when im racing and shift really fast, it will grind into 3rd, every time. I dont think its me, becuase i practice quick shifts. A friend though it may be the syncros? Also, it will grind into reverse unless i pop it in and out of 4th one or twice, before going into reverse. any ideas?

subscribing here, My gears don't grind at all, but sometimes when i want to put it in reverse, it will only go in a little bit, then i take it out of reverse and put it in 4th or second, then go back to reverse and it goes in fine. Is this an early indication that my synchros are going out?

sure the rebuild kit is only $170, but a shop charges a ton of money to do the labor
A few people have rebuilt their own T5's...cant remember who it was though

i think he is trying to say its "its a good time to upgrade when it goes"

clutch cable could be loose causing it to grind into reverse.

hey my car does the same thing going into second. I work for infiniti and the tech used to work for ford, he said its the syncros. ive called around and a shop will rebuild it for around 250-300$. or if u decide to do it yourself the kit is about 150$. u might want to take off the shift boot to see if one of the two screws that hold the shifter on came loose, it happened to me. just put some lock tight on it and it will be fixed.

I agree with everyone else, it's the synchros. I'd absolutely recommend changing your trans fluid ASAP, to get the contaminants out before you do more damage. Don't be surprised if your trans fluid looks like someone poured glitter in it either, that's the shavings from the bad synchros. If you can get it rebuilt on the cheap with quality parts, you should really start saving for that, and keep it in consideration at all times when thinking about banging gears, as you'll only accelerate the problem. Then you run the risk of breaking teeth on the gears, since the synchros aren't synchronizing the speed of the gears before they engage, hence the grinding you're experiencing. The grinding into reverse is normal though, as far as T-5's go. Reverse isn't synchronized, so you usually need to hit another gear first, before reverse, so you can get the teeth to line up. Hope I haven't been the bearer of bad news here

The car dies when the Transmission shifts into 2nd, and it takes 10-15 seconds before it can actually shift into Reverse.
