Grinding into 5th

Iv got a T5 with about 190K (km) on it, getting pretty run down i suppose. When i change from 4th to 5th gear under load (over 3000+ rpm) it usually grinds. Now, its been doing this for the past year or so, do you think iv done damage to the gears, or is it hopefully just the synchro?

If 5th gear was wrecked what would be your suggestions? nerf the whole tranny and buy a new one, or rebuild? Finding a used T5 around here could be quite the ordeal, and i dont know if i can afford a new one (doubt it). But the cost of parts to rebuild would almost be as much as new one...right?

Here's the problem with transmission that most people don't understand. When the gears whine or have been grinding during shifts the gear teeth are damaged. They may have too much clearance (which is one of the causes of whining) or the teeth can be chipped. If either is the case, two things will happen: After the rebuild, the gears will still whine and if they were grinding during shifts they will either continue to grind or they will begin to grind very shortly after the rebuild is driven. Regardless of the gear damage (chipping or wear), the synchros will deteriorate at a more rapid rate due to the fact that when the teeth in the tranny get bad, it causes an alignment problem with the gears and synchros which eats away at the synchros. If the gears are worn or the chipping on the teeth edges is bad enough, the gears will cause almost immediate synchro failure.

If either of these gear related issues is in your transmission, the gears will need to be replaced as well as the other wear and small parts normally replaced during a "rebuild" if you want the transmission to last any length of time. Especially with aggressive driving.

your sycro' is gone, and the gear grinding is only messing it up more, it's putting metal shavings into the fluid and that's going to furthur damage the tranny. Been down that road once before, my 2nd gear went out. I would just try to put a little more fluid in it, thats what i did, kept my tranny alive for a little longer. Then it started doing it in 3rd and 4th and reverse. Not long after that it locked up. So, you get the idea. Good luck

Mine does EXACTLY the same thing. My plan is just to beat the snot out of it until its hits the crapper, then look for a tremec. Since I plan to mod the motor with H/C/I, I'm gonna have to upgrade the tranny anyways eventually. Full Rebuilds of these things go for about 500 dollars.

just wait it out and get a tremec... i constantly left foot brake with mine ands its holding up very well....even with me learning to left foot brake with this tranny...amazing props to tremec.

Alright, i figured as much. Guess ill be saving up for a new tranny :| thxs for all the help guys, MUCH APPRECTIATED. Im gonna pull the tranny within the next few weeks and take a look, ill post later with some pictures about my findings.

I had a question. My tranny tends to grind if I skip from 3rd to 5th during a hard romp. Like if I punch it to the speed limit and then go to shift it into 5th. Is this indicitive of any problem or just a design issue? Like the reverse going into reverse w/o putting it in a forward gear first.

It's better to go from 3rd to 4th to 5th, even if you don't take your foot off the clutch.

As far as fifth being bad, mine did the same thing wayyyyyy back. Had it rebuild it was fine. If it doesn't whine in 5th during cruising now, it likely won't after being rebuilt.

5th gear is an easy fix. Just replace the gear yourself. No need to even really disassemble the trans.

The 5th gear parts are located in the tailhousing. All you need to do is remove the tailhousing, drive out the roll pin and remove the 5th gear synchro. Then the 5th drive gear comes off with a snap ring.

The 5th gear synchro is about $20 and you can prob get a new 5th driven gear on ebay for $35 or so. Take about 1 hour to do the repair after pulling the trans

Hmm could do, only thing is third gear whines. 5th gear doesnt whine but wll grind when shifting into it under load. 3rd gear whines, but doesnt grind when warm, will when its just started thou, go figure.

Whining is bad anyway you look at it.

If you call hanlon motorsports and tell them exactly what your trans does, they will give you an estimate over the phone to fix it, if it exceeds $500-$550, get another trans instead.

They gave an estimate to fix my whining trans for $800 because it was a parts extensive repair, trans whined pretty bad.
So i got another instead.
