So, the 5.0 HO made 225hp in the mustang (E7 heads), and the explorer made 215hp with the gt40 heads and intake, stillon the same 302.........
"By 1997, the V8 was offered with nearly all trims (except XL[14]) and was paired with all-wheel drive; output was increased to 215 hp (160 kW) (from revised cylinder heads)."
My question is that how then if we bolt gt40 heads and intake can we get 275 from the mustang when it is effectivley bolted to the same 302 block?

Camshaft has a lot to do with it as does the tune in the Fox ECU.

The explorer was a 4 wheel drive, so the engine was cammed for low end and more torque.
Some articles showed it still ran really well, utlilizing the torque on the street.....
It isn't always about Horsepower...

Want to see even more of a miracle? Install some 225s, cam, and induction system capable of supporting it. The tiny factory heads that come on Windsor engine have always been an 'issue', if you want to call it that.

So then, if a guy wanted to build a whole engine from a gt40 302 from an explorer then the cam and ecc is worth 60 ponies! Not bad!

There is a 'little' more to it than that but close.

Not all 5.0 explorers were 4wd the explorer camshaft is similar to the 94-96 f150 mass air 5.0. also the hp number are net, measured at the transmission.

See my sig. 98' Explorer engine makes roughly 115hp and 100 tq over what it was originally rated at. Stock HO cam, stock untouched 'P' heads that have never been removed from the 175k mile short block.

It does have 1.7 RR's, I ported the lower intake, Tubular upper with 70mm tb and I spent MANY hours tuning it myself. Crazy how strong it runs for what it is.

Thats true.. The point I was trying to make is the stock explorer cam is designed for lower and mid range power, like a truck should need...

Advertised 215 net hp with a truck roller cam,
Gt40 heads and intake. My bronco has a mustang roller cam, GT40 heads and explorer intake.
