All, I am considering putting in an explorer engine, and I know I need to upgrade the valve springs.

I don't know everything that needs to be done.

Is it just the springs that need to be replaced?

If so, can I get a set of stock GT springs that my car runs now for them? (new of course)

I know trick flow makes a kit, but that kit comes with much more than just springs. Is there a reason for this? Does all of this stuff need to be replaced?

Is this something that I should leave to a shop that does heads?

Since the heads are still on the motor, I have read that there is a tool that comes in the trick flow kit to replace the springs as it sits. I am assuming that this would mean that the valves don't need to be reseated since they are sitting there in their natural spot.

If I do this on heads that are off the engine I am assuming that I will need to reseat the valves. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Keith

I would highly suggest you have a shop do the head work. They will have all the tools and they know how to use them. The TFS kit has everything you would need to put new springs on the head and I would suggest that everything that comes in the spring kit be used. I posted in your other thread, when I had my heads done the shop used their springs and parts. Total cost for new springs, guides, seals, freeze plugs, media blast and paint was about 300 dollars.

Also I would keep the metal valve cover gaskets that come on the explorer motor. No one told me what they were and I threw mine away. The explorer valve covers will also clear roller rockers. I am not sure if they are the same valve covers that are stock on the SN cars though.

It depends, if you are keeping the stock explorer cam (bad idea) you wont need to upgrade the springs. If you are swapping in a mustang or off the shelf aftermarket cam then yes you will need to upgrade the springs to at least stock mustang springs.
