Okay, the time has come to prep my heads. They're from a '97 Mountaineer w/ 60K miles. I know harldly anything about heads and valvetrain. All this talk with cams is foreign to me as well.... lift.. duration...

Anyhow, I wanna get the best power combo with these things. I'll have the upper/lower from the Mountaineer as well, which I will get ported by Tom. So what all should I do to these heads? I know I need to get them cleaned up and ported. What about milling? What are good parts to get?.... springs....valves....rockers, etc. Also, do I use the stock VC's?

I know I have alot of questions, which sound stupid, but I just don't know about this stuff. Thanks.

It takes a pro to get more flow from the intake side of those heads. I would highly recommend either replacing the stock valves with good manley tulip style valves and good springs or upping the exxhaust valve to a 1.55" tulip valve. A Crane 2030 or 2031, or Crower 15510 or 15511 cam would work very well with that combo. If you mean me by "Tom", save your money on the intake and put it in the heads, that Mountaneer intake will cover the flow needs of stock GT40/GT40P heads.

Hey Tom, yeah I was referring to you, as I've heard you do the best job in porting. You said the Mountaineer will cover the flow needs of stock GT40/GT40P heads..... but these will be ported with upgraded valvetrain.... do you still think it will suffice in stock form? I wanna get as much power as possible with this H/C/I setup....

If your porter can assure y0u that the heads will flow more than ~220cfm, it might be worth porting the lower if you have the money left over - don't chince out on the heads.
