What's up guys,

I recently pick up a set of used p heads that are completely stock and supposedly pulled off of a running mustang. I have read that the stock valve springs suck on these heads. My question is...........how much lift can these springs handle in stock form? I am installing these on my 94 GT AODE with stock cam and rockers. Has anyone on here ever installed these heads without upgrading the springs, or is it a must even with the stock stick? If I need to upgrade, which setup would work well? Trickflow? Crane? Also, I am begining to think I should have these checked out at a machine shop. How much should I expect to pay for valve job/pressure check/clean up/milling/ etc etc?

i would think with the stock cam and rockers you should be fine. i paid $180 for my machine shop bill. tanked, valve job, and resurfaced.

The springs that are stock on GT40P heads are for low lift explorer cams... somewhere in the .440" lift range.. I wouldn't even bother reusing them. I would order the trickflow kit from summit, which comes with springs, shims,seals, and then have your machine shop take a look at the heads... Won't be totally cheap, but still a bargain if you didn't pay too much for the heads...

Personally, I went with Beehive springs, and Titanium retainers, but then again.. my cam has .596" lift, with Comp XE lobes to contend with..

I used the crane springs on my gt40p heads and they seemed to work okay. I would have gotten the comp cams but they weren't in stock at the time.

cool.........thanks for the feed back guys. Has anyone had any experience with the edelbrock spring kits? I see they tend to run around $40 less than the TF kit, so I might give those a shot since I'm sticking with the stock cam.

Killer95Stang..........I see your in Covina. I live in Baldwin Park; Got any recommendations as far as machine shops go?

I've used more springs from Crane than others
but
I have used Comp's and they were just fine

Any of the major brands are gonna be OK IMHO
and
They are a WHOLE bunch better than OEM

I use a guy in San Dimas that I trust for the basic machine work, valve train setup ect. He's a straight foward guy, and is very reasonable. His shop is a small hole in the wall called Competition Auto Machine. Its a one man show, and you're eyes will bulge when you see how many old blocks, parts ect are stacked up in his small shop. He did the machine work on my current block, and all seems well. He's an old guy, with more knowledge in his pinky than I'll have in the rest of my life... lol
