has anyone put 87-93 gt. taillights in a non gt 79-93

iwas wanting to know if anybody had put the 87-93 gt tailights in 79-93 that wasn't a gt. i've swapped around about every set of tailights made for these cars and never had a problem until i bought a set of gt's for my 80 coupe.they line up fine at the 1/4 panel & trunklid but they stick out about 1'' to far on the bumper cover . i tried them on a 84 hatchback same thing.. i'm thinkin maybe i need a 87-93 lx bumper cover ?? but i don't want to go spend another 50-100$ and it not fit and don't want to use 87-93 gt bumper cover just wouldn't look right.

there you go! Cheese graters 9/10 times look only decent on a gt and thats if the gt looks nice (most people swap out for lx's). As for your fitment problems, on an 84 hatch it should fit, as for you 80 not to sure.

The taillights on the 79-86 cars are slightly more recessed than the 87-93 taillights are.

So when you put any 79-86 taillight on a 87-93, the taillights looks recessed in. When you put any 87-93 taillight (except 93 cobra) on an 79-86. They stick out.


It's not the housing that is different...the lens is what has changed

You are putting them on an '80 coupe. Any 87-93 taillight is gonna stick out LX or GT. The taillight lens on the newer cars is bigger

I havent tried them but since LX tails fit fine on GT's I know theyll fit ok.
I dont have the car here to put them on now.

The metal behind the taillights is also slightl different on the 79-82's then it is on the 83+. This might also be a cause of your prob.


Maybe i'm misunderstanding what you are trying to say. Any pics??

I've heard this too, you can do it but have to cut the metal for the bulbs to fit/line up right.

i know u have 2 cut the holes 4 the bulbs but my problem seems 2 be with the bump.cover . the sheetmetal could possibly be the prob. 2 / or it may be the gt tl's. only fit right on the gt bump.covers. i've never had any problems with the lx's..

Just get a big 2 or 3 inch hole saw from Sears and drill a hole where the tail panel is solid metal.
