So cal
I have 4.10's now and have a 5 speed. I feel my car needs alittle more on the acceleration on the topend(3rd gear & up)...With 4.10's I feel that once I hit 3rd it doesnt pull that hard, It feels like it needs more gear...I have 295/60/15 tires in the rear, could this be why my 4.10s feel like the acceleration is gone. It Felt Quicker when I had 245/50/15s, Now with the new tire feels slower and I have nore traction...how many people have 5 spd foxes with 4.30's and how was the acceleration? Would It rev up the motor too much for city crusing in 5th, I drive 10 miles a day, I dont mind the shifting often part as I had 4.10's for over a year daily driving and I never drive on the freeway...Should I go 4.30s, what the input from you guys, or people that had 4.30's before?
Oh as for plans Im going too keep the engine the way it is for atleast a few years, So I need to maximize what I have with the mostly stock motor..BTW I dont fear the gear.
I did some caculations at freeway speeds ill be at 80 mph @3k rpm with my tire size and 4.30's, and 2800 at 75mph...it seem to be about 150rpms-200rpms more than 4.10's, but im sure 4.30's will have alot more acceleration.

Id say stay with a smaller tire, a 4.10 should pull plenty hard with a 5spd. I dont like runing down the highway and i have 3.73s with 255/50/16s on back. Some times putting to much gear in a stock motor will slow it down, gets it out of the power range to fast, Id say 4.10s are good for what you have, just the tires might be alittle to tall.

Your set-up must really be dialed in if you're going to swap between two ratios that close...............

I'd need more of a jump personally (or I'd not do it).

Good luck with the decision.

I'm running a 4.30 with a 4 banger trans and a 2.3, and it is FUN! I have a 28" street tire that revs quickly, but my 26" drag radials are great, they hook and rev even quicker!

Go for it, don't fear the gear, it wont hurt you unless it puts you at to high of a RPM for your trap speed.

I think 4.30's will make it worse. Taller gears just don't perform as well as you would think in high rpms'. If anything you lose a little top end acceleration due to blasting through the powerband too quickly.

The fastest top end cars i've ever driven all had low gears. Cars with 3.27's 3.08's and 3.55's all pulled harder up top than car's i've driven with 4.10's and higher.

If you think its losing steam in 3rd gear.....well that's just how stock-headed 5.0's all are. I'd take a look at your combo than trying to band-aid it with taller gears. .

Nah 4.30 will gain top end(not top-end MPH) Top-end acceleration,It will not make it worse thats a fact...as for ratios Ive had 3.55's, 3.73s and 4.10s..Currently running 4.10's, Ive raced many cars with similar mods and beat them because I had 4.10's. I trap at 100 or so now, Im not going to be going into 5th when I cross the traps, and I also have a taller tire than stock, 28" tall, so right now its making my 4.10s fell like 3.90's or 3.73's...I also just bought the tires, so Im wanting to change to 4.30's to get the extra benefit of the gear with the tires I have...I also never drive on the freeway, all city driving.. I think I can possible gain from having 4.30's with the 28" tire I have...I want to hear from others who have 4.30's to hear there comments...BTW I dont fear the gear.

getting that low of a gear may help a bit but like stated before the powerband will be way to fast. the low gear will get the rpms up where the stock heads and intake do no flow their best.

it may help a bit but its nots going to make the car pull like a freight train, i doubt you would notice a difference honestly. like i said before the lower gear will get those rpms up faster and the stock heads and intake will be choking it off bad, if you want the car to pull harder, get rid of the stock heads and intake and the car will come alive.

running that low of a gear is a no no, way too low for my tastes and once you do add mods, the engine will held back bythe gears.

i ran this through a calculator, a fox with 4.30s and a stock t5 with a 28 inch tire will only be able to go 100 mph in 4th gear at 5200 rpm, where a stock engine stops making power. that sucks imo. http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm

i'd just stick with what you have and add some actual engine parts like cylinder heads to make more power.
