Have you ever stuck your finger...

In your transmission fill hole? I need to check the tranny fluid..How far should I stick my finger in, and where should the fluid be on my finger? Also, where is a safe place to put jackstands on the four corners?

I have to be a little suspicious!

As far as how high the level should be....I dunno, last time, I topped it off when I swapped shifters, just poured some in
Jack points would be on the frame rails forward of the rear tires, and rearward of the front tires.

I was told the fluid level should be right up to the bottom of the threads of the fill hole. Basically you keep adding fluid until it starts coming out the fill hole.

You should feel the fluid on the bottom edge of your finger once you stick it in the hole. Some people put the jackstands under the axle as well....I did and never hurt anything.

Ok. Thanks guys..Hope I dont get my finger stuck, like I did with the oil drain hole . Dont ask me why I stuck it in there.

I filled my tranny up with RP and I couldnt feel the fluid level after almost 4 bottles (about 3.5 quarts I believe....what the T3650 calls for according to tremic. Although its listed at 4 I think)

Some of you are thinking about the rearend, yes fill until its almost at the drain hole. BUT HE IS TALKING ABOUT HIS TRANSMISSION!

So for the T-45 would it still be 3.5q? Does anyone know?

I used to have a 1986 IROC-Z with serious (automatic) transmission problems (my fault). Needless to say, it leaked. A lot. So...I got kinda lazy and just started guessing on how much fluid it needed.

I filled it up one day, and as soon as I got on it I heard a muffled "boom" and I was pouring white smoke from the car. (You shoulda seen traffic in my rearview). But the car went along fine...so I tried flooring it again and the same thing happened, but without the boom.

I got to work, popped the hood...and sure enough, I'd shot the dipstick out of the hole. Everytime I floored it, it spewed tranny fluid onto hot parts and evaporated, creating a lot of white smoke.

Just FYI...

You still have to fill the tranny with fluid, until it pours out of the fill hole (or you can check the level with your finger, should be right close to the top).

^ Sorry, but thats not right. If you fill it that much, it would shift like CRAP....im pretty sure it would jack stuff up. Not to mention it would probably run out of the rear seal, if not it would leak much more easily.

A fix for the T-3650's shifting problems is to actually fill less than the reccomended 4 quarts...to 3.5 I believe. That and RP helped mine out a TONE. Please dont over fill the things.

Yes, manual. Mine is a '98GT. It has a T45, or T50D..Not sure which one. But all this talk about over-filling, and screwin stuff up is making me nervous. Thats why I want to be sure.

That's what I thought...manual. Ok...I understand hotmustang's point. The haynes manual and Ford recommends the finger check method. I think others have found that in some cases that can be too much fluid, and by draining and filling up with an exact amount...their tranny's operate more smoothly. So its really your call. If it were me....I'd drain it completely, then begin filling while keeping up with how much gets added. When you get to the point of 3.5...see how close it is to the bottom of the fill hole. I don't know what Ford recommends as far as quantity for tranny fluid though.
