just wondering what the best way to do a hci is? ive seen the systems from holley, TF etc that have everything. is that the best way to go, with everything matching? or would i be able to put together a better set up for the same or less money on my own?
Buy the package deal. The time and money spent searching and still not knowing that everything is 100% compatable exceeds the cost savings you might achieve. It's the little things that get you, like one head needs different rocker arms or hardened pushrods or some other small parts. These things get expensive if you have to buy them twice.
thats kinda what i had figured. i have just heard great stuff about AFR 165's, so i kinda wanted to look into a pair of those. If there will be a major power difference between a package and a mixed brand setup, a couple hundred bucks is not a big deal. are they all going to come out about eqaul in the end?
TrickFlow has a sweet combo. I can attest to that. Installed the Track Heat system right out of the box onto a refreshed stock block bored .030 over, stock crank and rods, new forged pistons. I have about $3500 total in the motor. All I had to buy extra was the rebuild kit from Summit that included the pistons and new lifters. I used the stock fuel rails, new 24 lb injectors to match the 75mm ProM. Dyno'ed at a modest but fun 290 hp and 320 torque to the tires through a stock AOD and 3.73 gears. Motor screams around town in my 91 coupe. Great kit for a daily driver. Really nice lope at idle, too.
The kits are a great way to go......epecially for someone new to modding.
The kits Blueoval sells on ebay don't seem like a bad deal. Just under $2000 shipped to your door, open the boxes and start installing. Works great for a stock block, no worries about parts working with one another, huge HP gain over stock and you prolly save around 40lbs off the front end of your car.

I went throught the same process as you...I decided on the Trick Flow kit..Basically it is more comeplete than the Holley. I too like to get more for my money. I cant remember what the Holley lacked but I know the Trick Flow had more components..You may look at the kit that Anderson Ford or 50 resto sells. I cant remember which one...
I also suggest the TFS kit. Only thing it doesn't come with is some lifters. From summit get the Ford ones they are about 120 bucks. I ended up having to take my intakes and roller rockers off to get to my 130k tired lifters shortly after doing my H/I/C. The holley kit doesn't come with roller rockers which will run you about 200 bucks more.

I wish I had done a kit instead of piecing it together one part at a time. I guess I should have just waited to save enough to blow all at once instead of little by little. Shipping costs, finding parts that will mingle with the others, bah!
