I am certain, that all the lower head bolts go into the water jackets... Is it totally necessary to use rtv or silicon or some kind of sealer on them - I bought ARP head bolts, and it came with a greyish bolt lubricant, I used that on every single one, but i do not want to move on w/ my motorwork knowing that this water is going to work it's way up the threads, hitting my heads n evaporating, leaving me low on water and having no leaks... help me out I'm not sure whether this will happen or if its all in my head!!!!!! (no pun intented, lol)

I use thread sealer on ALL the bolts...you def should use the ARP lube on the headbolts...no doubt.

That grey stuff was anti-seize compound. You should never put silicone around bolts. Smoke less pot and your mind won't get so carried away. If you did the install correctly everything should be fine. Worry about something else.

i thought you are sopposed to use pipe sealant on head bolts. thats what they do at the chevy shop i work at. its white teflon crap in a tube.

Also quoting his write up...."You'll need new head bolts - get ARP bolts ($40) or studs ($93, maybe more). All the bolts get antiseize under the bolt heads, and everything but the short head bolts get it on the threads. You need Teflon pipe dope or ARP sealant to coat the threads of the short head bolts. The short bolts go into the water jacket and will seep coolant if you don't use the sealant."


You need to seal those threads.

Why would you say something like that, i thought that that was a perfectly understandable thing to worry about... especially since I'm an amature at this, so u stop smoking pot and pay attention lol I DON"T KNOW WHAT I"M DOING lol This is the first time I ever built n engine from short block up...

QDRHRSE - Your comment really wasn't needed about the "pot".

Paul, I would pull those bottom bolts out one at a time and reinstall one at a time with thread sealer. They will almost always leak without thread sealer. Put the antiseize on the bottom of the washer and bottom of head bolt. Put thread sealer on the bottom bolts. Use some 30 or 40 weight oil (preferrably moly lube) on the top bolt threads.

ARP sells 2 kinds of lube....I personally bought both but that's uneccessary. The stuff you use for the lower bolts is very much like pipe dope.....but there are some different things they put into it, to make the torque evenly distributed when you tighten them. Don't use the grey ARP moly lube for the lower bolts, it will not seal them....you have to use the white thread sealer.

....just a little humor. Gee wiz, you guys are crabby. I did say "If you did the install correctly everything should be fine" right? Really it was a personal refererrence to my early college years. My bad.
