Head Unit Question

Okay so I feel pretty stupid asking this question but I wanted to check up on it. I need to get a new head unit for my 2001 GT, and I heard that if you have the Mach sound system in your car and add an aftermarket head unit, for some reason you need a new amp. Is this at all true?

Also, anyone have suggestions on head units around the $100 range?

im not 100% sure, but i think you can get adapter cables to plug the new head unit into the mach 460 amp, (thats what i did when i installed a pioneer cd into my explorer with the jbl premium system) do a search for mach 460 interface cables, it will pull up any type of adapter available...
