headers / muffler question...

Headers / muffler choices....

Ok I know it has been asked, but I am asking again... I have searched for a couple of hours....

I have a 289 bored .030 and a mild crane cam...in a 1965 mustang fastback

I would like to know opinions of headers...

BTW I would prefer not having to drop the headers every time I change plugs...I have heard that some headers you have to...


THis will be a daily driver...

Also opinions on mufflers...

I do not want too loud of mufflers...

I have 2 children and one on the way...

This is my car 3 weeks ago...now it is sitting on factory 1968 GT chrome wheels and gettting ready for new headers/exhaust and floor pans this comming week (hopefully) if I can descide!

the tri-ys will give you a kind of a classic style if thats what your going for. If I wanted a muffler that was somewhat performance oriented but not so Loud I would run magnaflows.

I thought Magnaflows were kinda loud Why not just some regular turbo mufflers, not too loud or too quiet.

magnaflows arent anywhere near as loud as flowmasters. They only really bark when you give it some throttle. Its louder than stock dont get me wrong but they are far from loud.

i too thought the magnaflows were loud. However..if you want a quiet muffler..be sure to get one with offset inlets and outlets. I ahve some cheapie summit turbo muffs on my car and it's pretty quiet. They were 20 bucks each. Also...if you want it to be quiet...be sure to exit the exhaust out from under the car. The summits have a tone to them..but are still quiet enough to not be annoying.

I think I see a trend...

for a not too load INSIDE sound...

1. Go with a turbo style muffler
2. exit out the rear...maybe a turndown

Now I need info on headers...I need to get these ordered today in order to get the car to the muffler shop this week...

They are doing the exhaust and welding in the floor pans for me...

The guy, I've know for a while, estimated sight unseen, about 200 to cut out and weld in new front short floor pans and extensions to the firewall on both sides. Does that sound like a good price?

My main concern with the headers is ability to change the plugs....

Also I am thinking of going with the X pipe..anyone have any cons to that...have read numerous threads...but no real cons...would like to hear from those that have them...

I run gasket matched Hipo exhaust manifolds. Not quite as free flowing as headers, but way better than stock, last forever and plug access is just like stock. I also run Flowmaster 50 Series Deltaflows. They are not terribly noisy and added power compared to the glass packs I used to have. Either a cross pipe or x pipe is best. I use a cross pipe for balancing. The idea is to not only quiet the tone a bit (each exhaust pulse will go through both mufflers) but you will get more torque. I read that wasn't the case, but my experience with it showed that a cross pipe did indeed help the bottom end torque noticably. Hope this helps.
