Heat dashlight tripping

I've got a '99 GT stock. After sitting for 10 months I pulled it out of storage the other day and while driving on the highway, the heat sensor light came on. The temp gauge was on normal and when I checked the coolant levels they were down a bit due to it sitting for so long..probably evaporated over the storage period. Now even with the coolant topped up, the heat light still comes on. The temp gauge is good--right on normal and there no leaks on the engine. Has anyone had this problem before?

Hate to sound stupid but what does the 'heat' sensor light look like?

Regardless, check your coolant and make sure that it is nice and green. Also, say your car is sitting there running, does the thermostat open and the fan cut on? When this happens the top hose going to the thermostat housing should get hot, but it will not get hot until the thermostat opens. So if that hose is not hot, then your thermostat may be sticking shut.

It could also be a sensor or something that may be gunked up a little from coolant sitting ... That happened to my coolant temperature sensor but when that happened, it made my car difficult to crank (for some reason) ...

No worries, the heat sensor is on the right hand corner of the display. It's orange in colour and is square that in the inside looks like little waves of water inside of the square. The fan cuts on when the car warms up. There are no leaks or anything of that nature so it shouldn't be a head gasket or anything serious of that sort. Thanks for your reply.

I dont think we have a heat light . I think we do have a low coolant light though...so maybe a sensor went bad.
