Well I have choose this Sunday to do the heater core replacement. I dont know if this is a good idea or not but Well I put it off since well January and I think winter is going to come this year too since it has not failed to come yet. Wish me luck in this because I guarantee there will be cussing and sluring while I am working on the car.

BTW If someone needs the link to the directions.

Heater Core Swap

If you have better directions well make sure I know before Sunday.

Thanks

There is a few better sites than that one. But I can't point you in the right direction because I seem to have lost my bookmarks (I hate it when that happens). Keep searching there are better ones. Someone else will know of them I'm sure. I need to do mine as well. My 89 is down for upgrades, the motor is out and in pieces and all the fun stuff, so as soon as I recover from a pair of surgeries I will cut a hole in the firewall and fix it that way and patch it up with a nice easy access cover. Have to be prepared for future failures..

I think it is pretty hard to do with the motor in the car. Even with while doing the headgasket it would be tricky. But I have everything out of mine right now, the firewall has nothing on it but the brake booster and m/c. So no better time for me. Here is one link that I found. There are easier ways that do not require removing the dash just opening it up a little and not un-hooking the a/c.

Don't like the looks of this one

I did mine with the engine in the car, not hard at all. Just like the article says is how I did it.

removed center console, lowered steering wheel, unhooked and removed the dash cover, unbolted the dash frame from the passenger side a-pillar and lowered it, then pulled out the core box.

only 3 bolts on the firewall side and they're not that hard to get to.

the pain is that it takes about 3 hours of just straight unbolting to get everything out. and then another 3 hours of just straight bolting to get everything back in.

one thing I DID do while I had the core out was I pulled the ecu and wiring harness up and out and relocated from the kickpanel area to ON the heater box using some long screws and hose as spacers.

I did this in anticipation of future eec tuner easy access, etc so that now all I have to do is remove the glove box and the eec is looking me in the face.

Those are the same directions that I followed when I did mine this summer. I took the dash out instead of just pulling it to one side. It made access to the core much easier. I agree that there will be many bad words coming from the garage when you do the swap, it takes a long time to get everything unbolted which can be tedious. But I wish you luck and be sure to label your bolts and stuff that way you don’t loose them. Take a look at page 5 on my site if you want to see some pics from when I did the swap. :nice:

Stackz we were talking about making an access door on the engine bay side while the engine was out not doing the replacement at that time.

Dan I am 2 steps ahead of you on that one. Step one Sticky notes, Step two Sandwich baggies.

So how much beer does this swap take I cant seem to fin that part in the directions yet.

yeah, I know but you said something about maybe doing that later so I thought you were going back to the original plan of popping the dash and doing it that way. guess I was wrong haha.

general rule of thumb is all swaps no matter how easy take at least a 6 pack.

LOL yeah I am going back to the "normal" way to do the change. Through the dash and a couple of hours of work. My engine swap (where I will work a access door for a later heater core fix) will be early next spring I hope. The heater cant take that long.

I am going to start Saturday night now so I can take the reccommended 6-pack during and add another for a job well done soon after.

Someone want to do this or me while I drink the 6-pack?

Last night the console and half the dash came out, I lost the light so I went inside.

This am 7 I finished taking out the dash and well with some dremmel help the heater core came out easily.

I have the dash back in and it is all hooked up but No coolant LOL SO I flushed the system with a hose and after the race I will go get some coolant to finish the job.

BTW I took the seats out and those damn seat bolts killed my back.

Anyone know what that computer under the riders seat is>?>>>>

Sorry can't help with the heater core thing, but that little computer thing is your factory amp for your Premium Sound system. Check your door speakers or maybe even your radio and they should say "Premium."

Use to install car stereos, so this is my area of expertise :nice:

Since I ahve all aftermarket sound can I dump it?

Thats a good question. I think so. To find out though just play your radio and then unplug the amp. If it still works, unbolt it, head over to the nearest trash can, and dispose of it.

Just think how much faster your car will be with the weight reduction.
