. I have a 94 gt with a 8.8 rear end . When I got the car it had the rear end whine noise . Now when turning it makes a loud pop and sometimes a grinding noise. I took the diff cover off and it has a set of 3:73s. All the gears look great! Would it be a pinion bearing or axle bearing ??? There was no metal shavings and the gear oil was clean

Sure it's not suspension making the noise?

I'll have to check it out . It has a rear sway bar and aftermarket suspension arms .

Potentially yes.

Very hard to diagnose sounds over the internet though. Really need to be with the car to be sure

I know . Just thought I'd take a long shot . If the pinion bearing was bad would the drive shaft have play ?

Even one of the Torque Boxes can be cracked which could cause a popping sound too.

My neighbor had a popping sound in his pickup, it was just the beer can I tied to his driveshaft
Grab a friend and head to a parking lot, drive slowly around in a figuare eight while your friend listens on the passenger side and you on the drivers side for the offending noise, also watch for excessive side movement in the rear axel.

Is your car lowered, incorrect pinion angle can increase a whine. If not check your driveshaft bolts slop, can cause a pop/clunk sound.
