Alright, I was running late for work, go to start the car, it squeels, smoke pours out of the hood, pop it and the belt is melted and broken. I check all the pulleys, and they all spin freely accept for the smog pump. My question is, is the smog pump suppose to spin freely, and is that most likely the culpret? Thanks guys. And is that a easy change?

Yep. You need a new smog pump. I had the exact same thing happen to me in the parking lot at school. Had been driving it all morning and the belt decided to break right in the parking lot. Guess i had some good luck that morning though, coulda been worse. Its not a hard job though, i changed mine out right in the parking lot in about 15 minutes. Hey, at least it didnt break goin down the road.....

Yes the smog pump is supposed to spin freely.

I changed one 2 weeks ago. Pump was $39, + $10 core, and instock at Autozone, for my 79.

Took 30 minutes to change. I put my old belt back on.

Easy to do, or you can run a string around it, to measure the new length, and get a short belt for temporary if you need to wait to change it.
