Well i have decided not to go with the ported GT-40 irons and save up for some aluminum heads. I am debating between the TFS TW heads and the AFR 165 heads. Give me your side and then post in my poll. Thanks
I'm voting for the TW heads for one, they can be had for a little under $1000 while the AFR's will be closer to $1400. Both are very nice quality heads, two of the best. Depending on who you talk to is what kind of answer your going to get. An AFR owner will say get AFR's, a TW owner will say to get TW. If money is somewhat of a problem, then I'd defently go for the TW heads.
AFR's make the most power, period. I don't like TW stuff, for a few reasons, but those are mostly personal preferences. I think Edelbrock makes better stuff than TFS all around, heads, intakes, misc chit. In fact, I'm quite confident that the new Edelbrock heads are capable of out performing TFS heads. If it were me, you should keep the decision between AFR and Edelbrock.
Get the AFR's. On a 302 cubic inch motor, the AFR 165's will make more power, especially down in the rpm's due to pure velocity.
Talk to a real engine builder like Ed curtis about it. He does sell TW and AFR's, so you get the honest truth about each head. I originally wanted TW's myself, but after talking with him and other people it was pretty clear that the AFR's are the only way to go.
Thanks for all the replys guys keep them coming, i'm pretty sure that AFR is the way i will go but we'll see. Joes95GT, that makes me wonder about the Edelbrocks i wish i knew someone who had proof that the new ones will out perform the TW's. I've had 2 sets of edelbrock heads and they were great.
I run TFS TW heads. I wish I had saved up the money and gotten the AFRs. The reason is not based on power, but because the TFS TW heads fell apart in 6 months. TFS makes a good bare casting but its drivetrain components are garbage. AFR is made with better stuff and according to MM and FF make a ton of power. Check out MM's Ultimate head comparo for the airflow and Dyno numbers on each. The cost of having the heads reconditioned and the valvetrain replaced destroys the initial $400 savings over the AFRs.
I've heard that the Trick Flow heads have a better spring package out of box compared the the AFR's. I'm pretty sure MM&FF said the same thing in their cylinder head test article
This might change your decision. Trick Flow TW heads are on sale for $939 at Summit through the end of the month. That is one heck of a deal. Trick Flow also has a comlete gasket set for $87.
I don't own either so I am not bias towards one or the other, however, AFR's are the better head...and you can get them for $1300 or so just look around...check out eBay etc...TW heads have more potential but it cost money to expand the potential of the TW heads where as AFR's are already nicely made right out of the box...Save the extra money and get AFR's...you will be happier in the end...match that up with a nice FTI cam and a nice intake and it's guaranteed mid 12's or better...assuming you get traction.
I've made a few replies on the corral, but obviously my vote goes for the AFR's. Even if a power adder is in your future, they will fit the bill. If added cubes are a definite, you might want to either get the 185's (but not on the stock pistons) or the TW's. the TW's were grouped with a different group in the MM&FF comparison for a reason... they have a larger intake port and larger intake valves than the 165... but in terms of peak flow they are within spitting distance of one another. Personally I want the best flowing head I can get THAT IS ABLE TO DO IT WITH THE SMALLEST PORT possible. This promotes cylinder filling at slower engine speeds which makes for a broader torque curve and therefore a larger area under the curve.
I couldn't agree with Jeff more... no matter what head you get, CHECK THE GEOMETRY!!! This is SO important. Both heads will make great power, but I like the AFR more... I've had good experiences with it.
over the time ive been here on Stangnet based on convos with Paul, and seeing other users on here, and a couple emails ive sent to Ed Curtis (runs FTI) ive been sold on the 165's or the 185's depending on plans....from the power numbers ive seen...the AFR heads combined with an FTI cam do not always produce the MOST power...but by far the most USABLE power...and that is the most important...its not how much you MAKE but how much can you USE....and ive seen AFR headed cars give broader power bands more than a few times.....
