A few friends convinced me to go to the track Friday after I said i was done for the season. i've gone a best of 14.3 with a 2.3 60'. I really would love to go 13's before the season is over but dont have any money to spend this week. I have 2.73 gears on street tires. If i could lower my 60' to a 2.1, I think i could see 13's. Any suggestions?

*EDIT* Mods in sig...

You need to get much more detailed with what you HAVE done...

what is your suspension setup? do you have access to drag radials/slicks?

remove the front sway bar, that should help some, set your timing to 15 degrees. You really should put everything you've done in your sig.

also, what are your launching techniques?

I ran a 14.1@99 on street tires with 3.73's. After throwing on the DR's it went down to 13.7@99, 60' dropped obviously.

It's going to be all about your launch. You just have to work the clutch and throttle together to go as hard as you can w/o spinning too bad. Even with traction and the 2.73's there could be problems with bog and that could hurt you even more. You might even be doing about as good as you can without gears and traction.

drop srteet tires in rear to 26-28psi and inflate fronts to 2-3 lbs over max. then try a short belt maybe even pull air filter if its a panel in the stock box. of course go around water box then just dry hope the dirt off tires. shift around 5000

Work on your launch.

Also whatever doesn't need to be in your car ditch it (passenger seat, rear seat, jack, spare, subs, etc.)

I think its possible but unlikely. You have the same trap speed as me, but my 60 is 2.4. But yeah, id would remove the front sway bar, takes off about 30 or so pounds of front end weight, and really helps the front end lift better. Also, timing, if yours it at 10 or even 12, bump it up to 14-16 degrees, this is good for at least 5HP maybe even a little more. This will more than likely put in the very low 14's making you even more eager to get 13's, but with gears and traction, 13's shouldnt be a problem. I see you have an Off road H, have yous ditched the Smog crap, thats good for another 10 or pounds of front end weight! Lets us know how it turns out, good luck

thanks for everyones good advice, as of now here's what im gonna do:
pull the front sway bar, bump the timing, drop the FP to 32psi, get some weight out of the car, tire pressure to 25 in the back, and 3 over max in the front. I'm trying to find DR's to borrow from someone but cant find any. I think im gonna come off the line at about 1800 slipping the clutch and easing into the throttle, what does everyone think of that?

sounds good remember peak power on stock 5.0's is around 4800rpms so you should shift around 5100-5200. plus ice down the intake, for me thats a good tenth.

Without gears, the dr's are not going to help very much. With good weather, and a decent launch (good track prep helps)...13's are a posibility leaving the car as-is.

Also, I'd bring those rpms up towards 3000-3500 and feather the clutch. With stock sized radial tires, I was able to consistantly cut 2.0 60's with the stock 2.73 gears. I would get a tad bit of spin off the line in order to keep from bogging to bad, and feather the living ****nit out of her.

you mgiht be able to do it. the colder temps will be your friend and foe. they will help drop your ETs, but make it harder to hook. If you can drive it balls to the wall, your gonna be close.

i've heard a few different things about where to shift. when i went 14.3 i was shifting at about 5500 on a stock tach, someoen told me to shift at 6000, and you guys are telling me 5100 or 5200, what do you think?
And RSW007, how the hell is your car so damn fast?!

the stock intake and cam is only setup to the 5200ish area. so anything really over that is overkill.

Although it may be overkill, many of us that once had 2.73's netted better times shifting at higher rpms.

Now weather it was the lack of tach accuracy at higher rpms, the 2.73's themselves or a combination of both, I'm not sure.

Ultimately, he is going to have to experiment with his shift points until he finds the best rpms for each gear. Going off of what
other people say can sometimes get you close, but I would not believe it to be gospel.
