i dont know if anyone can answer this but i have a labrador about 8 years old. and for the past few weeks he hasnt wanted to eat much and he wont really get up or walk around like he used to. his breath has gotten really bad and smells odd, he wont eat anything really. he has lost a ton of weight and we feel like he is dying. we also think he has eaten something that he shouldnt have (and hes always done this) and it has gotten to him. my guess is arthritis, and it could be making him weak and not want to move, and it makes sense becasue its just gotten colder here.

anyone that can help please do.

Is he on a heart worm medication? My co-workers dog got heart worms and the symptons were similar.

it could be a number of things. What I would do is try giving him milk and rice, he should eat this. that way you will raise his spirits until he gets to the vet. does he have hip or other joint probs? check his lymph noids they are located under the back of his jaw bone(one on each side), and he also has them just forward of his balls where the leg meets the abdomon. if these are swolen it usually is not good.

good luck with your pup I wish the best for you. chris

oh yea dogs get depressed easy, probe around his mouth with your finger. softly at first so he doesnt bite. if you find a tooth that makes him jump or flinch just douse it with ambosol. chris

Could be kidney problems? Maybe not quite the same but my cat died of kidney failure...same symptoms, didn't eat, bad breath (worse than usual), and just laid around and wasn't the same friendly, people person cat. In any case good luck with your dog, its tough when a family pet is in this situation, especially around christmas.

not to be a d**k but why would you wait a few weeks to take him to the vet?we have to dogs and when the are not feeling well we give 2-3 days to get better or we take them to the vet.our vet says as long as your dog has a appetite and he is going to the bathroom normally you should be ok.But when the are not eating or doing normal "dog" things they should be brought rite in.i hope all works out. phil

well my dads had dogs in the past that have eaten something odd and they pulled through it and got better, but our current dog hasnt. hes goin to the vet tomorrow.

i hope that every thing works out well for your dog, and i dont want to be the barer of bad news but my in laws had a similar problem with their golden retriever. turned out that it had cancer and unfortunately wasn't around much longer. i hope for you and your family that this is not the case, loosing a dog is like loosing a family member.

we just took him to the vet, his heart is beating fine, and she said she can feel some matter in his abdominal region that might be something he ate (but it wouldnt stick around this long) or cancer like you said. hes there now getting blood work and x-rays, let you know how it goes.
