help with rearend and brake lines

I am swapping my rearend for a 9" that I found. Car is a 66 mustang with drum brakes. I have some questions...

There is a "distrubution block" on my rearend...i dont think its suppose to come off. It has two hard lines that run out of it to my drums. It has a soft line that runs up into the body (i need to replace this because it is rotted) - however, i have no idea what that line is for or where it goes. Then there is another soft line that has a fitting like an AC line on the distribution block end and what looks like a nut-type fitting that screws into a hard line that runs to the front of the car.

I can easily remove the one rotted softline....but the other line i guess is my question. I assume that i remove it where it meets the hardline on the 'nut' end and the whole rearend drops out with the hard lines and distrubution block still in tact. Is this right?

Any help would be appreciated

The soft line (rubber) is the vent for the rear end. It runs up into the body and has an end on it to prevent moisture from going back down into the rear end. The rubber vent line attaches to a nipple fitting that screws into the rear end. This is usually what holds the distribution block down as well.

The distribution "block" will come out of the rear end. The tube going straight up is for venting as the rear builds up pressure under heat. The rubber line that seems fixed to the distribution block is the brake line and it can be purchased at any number of places. This brake line will come with a new distribution block.

Someone correct me if necessary.

All of this stuff should be taken apart and inspected. Nothing much worst than no brakes.

Excellant choice for a swap! The rotted soft like is indeed the vent tube. The rest of that assembly is the rear brake hose. The left and right brake lines connect to it.

I hope you have the correct rearend for your car... its easy to get a rearend that is too wide for the 65-66 Mustangs. Any idea what it came from? There is an excellant chance that the rear brake hose from the 9" won't fit to the intermediate brake line...better check. If you need to replace it, be sure to get either the single exhaust or dual exhaust version, whichever is correct for your car. Also check for crimps on the left & right brake lines...

Good timing ! I just rebuilt my 9" rearend last week. The other replies are correct. The distribution block is held on by the vent assembly, which can be removed with a deep well socket (9/16 if I remember correctly). I purchased all new brake lines and the distribution block from Mustangs Unlimited. The block was around $45 and the hard lines to the drums were about $30. Hope this helps.
