HELP with timing, why does the timing change with spout?

Okay I changed my timing to 12 degrees, titened up the distributor, turned off the car, the put the spout connector back on, I fire it up and it looks like the timing changed to near 18 degrees, WTF..did I do something wrong i read the instructions on the how-to..

I had it at 14 ran it seemed to ping at 5k++backed it down to 12 degrees,,ping went away.


Info or help would be appreciated

when you put the spout back in the computer takes over and ads timing and takes it out where needed. You did nothing wrong, all you did was set the base timing, so the computer advances from there...

The whole reason for having the pcm in the first place is to control
Fuel & Spark for all the various conditions we encounter as we drive.

The pcm is always changing the spark value ...........
and
That value is mostly based upon load & rpm

ECT & ACT can manipulate the value as well

The idle spark setting at the dizzy is just a kind of reference point.

When you see peeps move it from the OEM setting of 10, you have
to + or - that value to what the pcm commands for the true amount
of advance.

That is why a lot of the time, you see the GT Stangs ping with more
dizzy advancement.

geez i never knew setting your timing would be so confusing

Myself and various other peeps have posted up Spark Tables several times
on our forum here.

If you can find them with the search engine, it will make a whole lot
more sense to you :Word:

What are your mods?? If your just bolt-ons I wouldn't go any higher than 5000 rpms

As I read the thread, I thought some info could be interpreted wrong. As everyone said, the puter does change the timing (SPOUT out timing is purely mechanical).
However, some peeps think that a timing (global spark) change is useless and that the computer will 'adapt' around the change that is made (essentially making a timing change moot). AFAIK, this is not so. The dizzy-twisting timing-change phase shifts the spark curve, so it's still quite a useful adjustment.

I know all the repliers were on this same page, however I feared that Trav's question might have been misinterpreted (and he was asking if the computer could 'sense' what the timing is, and would remove timing if you advanced the dizzy).
Or (more likely) it was simply me whom misinterpreted his question. :bang:

There is WAY more goin on that just setting a spark value at the hb :D

As in 99.999999 % of the time ........ I'll throw in with what JT says :nice:

If you set your dizzy with the spout out Trav ......
It will be the same value later on when you check it ... spout out that is ;)

The down side to upping the spark value at the dizzy is .........
Its an all or nothin kinda thing ... or ... a global thing if you prefer :)

Where you can or might get in trouble with higher dizzy values is
at a driving condition of mid load and rpm where the
spark values are quite high.

You can see values of 40 degrees and more during these conditions :eek:

If you set your dizzy at say 16 ............
You gotta add 6 degrees to ALL conditions possible for the true value :D

Can You See Why Now ... When we talked above about the tendency
of the GT Stangs to be so prone to the ping thing.

The quality (octane that is) of gas has gone down and down since our cars
have been made which doesn't help with this issue as well.

You just gotta consider this ..........
Some of the time ... You may not be able to go all that much above 10
and
Some Stangs will be more tolerant about that than others ;)
