Hey Ford of Canada - WAKE UP!

I just priced out 2 similarly equipped Mustangs. 1 from Ford USA in New York, 1 from Ford of Canada.

Ford USA $30,300 ($US)
Ford of Canada $41,025 ($CDN)

Canadian Dollar currently is worth $1.03 so, to buy a Mustang in Canada, I would have to pay $42,255 in US funds.

Here's the kicker: As a Canadian, almost all Ford dealers in the US will not sell a car to me, even if I pay cash. There is a collusion going on to keep the dealer's prices high in Canada.

However, if I go to a non-Ford used car dealer in the US and buy a Mustang with very few miles, I save $20,000.00! The only thing is worrying whether Ford will honour the warranty in Canada.

All I can see are miles of Mustangs here, sitting on dealer lots....

That's insane! Are other cars marked up so high also? Or do they just feel Canadians will pay gouged prices for mustangs?

They're all like that. There's currently a big law suit pending with Four of the major auto manufactures in Canada because of this. This has been par for the course over the last 30-years or so. (basically since the last time our dollar was worth more than yours).

Total BS. And they're complaining about trouble with the major North American Motor Companies. Karma is a bitch. They got greedy for the last 3-decades and now they're gonna pay for it!

Have you tried looking further to the south, I mean further distances from the border. Your likely to find some dealers not in range of the border are likely more about the sale than the import export wars.

There was an article in the Journal de Montreal a couple weeks ago about this. The warranties become void the minute you cross the border. Some companies will only void part of the warranty, some none, some the whole thing. I remember distinctly Honda and Acura void it completely, Mazda I believe was a partial, but I don't remember the rest.

New Ford warranties are good in the USA and Canada. The dealership I work (near Seattle, WA) for is getting more and more Canadian inquiries every week (several per day!). We have always sold to Canadians, and have a page on our website to inform them how they can buy from us (see link below)...

This has been great business for us. While we don't like a weak US$, we do like the extra business we're getting from our friends to the north.

We also do a lot of business with Alaskans & Oregonians, and ship anywhere in the USA. In fact, we just sold a Shelby Mustang to a guy in Pennsylvania. We've even shipped to Europe.

We are truly in a global economy.

mustang GTs are on for $26k around me and i live in canada. these are well equipped ones as well.

Ford, GM and Chrysler will honour the factory warranties. I have been looking to upgrade my winter vehicle and that is what I plan on doing is bringing a new truck across the border.

And how is it run? You also spell it Britannia.

The car business here is run by the manufacturers franchising dealers and not by the dealers. iI means they sell cars for...shock, horror...list price or less. They are not permitted to sell cars for a premium to line their own pockets and Brits aren't stupid enough to pay premiums unless it's for something uber-rare. British dealers work on volume sales from which they get discounts from the manufacturers. It's a very competitive market.

As for the prices, well that's down to the Government charging 10% import duty on all cars and 17.5% VAT on top more than anything else. Then again, we can buy Mustangs at $2 to the £ at the moment. Shame Ford won't sell them over here though.

For kicks last week, I priced out some new Mustangs on ford.ca and ford.com (optioned as equal as possible):

GT/CS:
CAD = 38,889 USD = 31,860

Bullitt
CAD = 40,289 USD = 31,940

Since our dollars are hovering around equal, this sucks for Canadians. And it gets worse, I checked again today and the base price of the GT/CS has gone up by $500 and they've added a new $1000 Green Tax (on all new GT's.) Even worse, the Bullitt option is no longer listed???

Sounds like they just never adjusted for exchange rates since about mid 2004. Doubtful though, thats not something that is likely to be overlooked. Only possible thing I can think of is perhaps there is some type of import tax that is built into the MSRP?

I have been researching the cost of buying in Canada and the US for my next vehicle. I am looking at a 2008 Ford Explorer SportTrac with the 4.6L V8. By the time it is said and done, I am not really saving a lot buying the vehicle in the US, roughly $1200.00. For $1200, I am not sure it is worth the hassle...

That also said, I am looking at the Chevy Avalanche as well. Said and done, it is cheaper to buy it here than the US.
