Hi..ordered heads... will I need a tune?

Hi,

I just received my MHS Stage 1 Ported PI Heads with stage 1 cams. Will i need a tune or can i just bolt the heads and drive around?
I mean what are the negative things besides maybe a rough idle??

Also, i have a diablo, where can i get a file (Tune) sent via mail so i can tune my car now, thats of course IF its very important to tune it now with these heads

will i can till you for sure your going to run too lean at higher rpms , your idle will be rough and your car will sometime die on you. do it right the first time and get it tuned so you can enjoy it

With stage 1 heads and cams, you shouldn't 'need' a tune unless you changed the compression ratio drastically. Your drivability shouldn’t be affected noticeably. However, a tune will get you a few extra ponies.

I don't know anything about mail order tunes or anything about diablo. I've always used SCT. I've also always had my car dyno tuned and recently started tuning it myself with SCT PRP.

If you want a tune, just have the car dyno tuned at a reputable shop by a professional.

I used to always get mail order tunes back when i used Xcal 2. I'm just not so sure about Diablo.

I wouldn't even Think about driving it until i got it professionally dyno tuned...

Why?

With stage 1 cams and heads, if you dont change your MAF, injectors, o2 sensor locations, or pre-maf intake setup, you really wont need a tune unless you think you may exceed the limits of your fuel pump, injectors, or maf.

Well i am throwing in a wideband gauge to make sure i wont run lean. So i was planing to drive it slowly while checking the AFR and keep my eyes on it . I didnt think i would need a tune for stage 1, unless i wanna get the maximum out of it, OR to fix my idle problem. Otherwise i should be fine. I was thinking a mail order tune and a wideband will make me about 99% safe.
So no one ever got a mail order tune from Diablo?? i used to do it all the time while i ran my Xcal2 . I didnt think DIablo should be any different!

You dont even need the wide band. There is no reason for your afr to change significantly from factory specifications which are very conservative already.

A mail order tune would lean out and add timing to your setup blindly without checking for pinging or changes in power and torque output.

Spend the money you were going to spend on the A/F gauge and just get a dyno tune. With the car on the dyno and with a wideband A/F gauge reading during the dyno session, they can safely add timing and lean it out for max power while staying out of the detonation. They can also address any drivability issues you may have (but most likely wont).

A mail order tune is just a conservative guess, or even worse, not conservative enough and it could ping.

I have delt with a few mustangs and mail order tunes. I'm good enough. The problem is that we dont have a dyno shop anywhere near by. So mail order tunes is the best we can get

You have already spent a lot of money on parts. I would take a drive, even if it is 4-5 hours, spend the money, and have it tuned correctly.
