A guy down the road from me came up to my house again today and asked me when Im going to pick up this HI PO ENINE, he wants it out of the way, sitting in his garage for 35 years,, FREE!!!!
But I need to know what to look for, its all together, can I tell a HI PO from the outside. need help here please.

mech advance distrbutor with dual points, thicker balancer than you'd normally see, hi-po exh.manifolds, if you can pop a valve cover look for cast in spring seats, screw in studs, and the slotted pushrod holes in the head. Obviously, it should have a 4 barrel carb and intake... Other differences would be harder to spot with an external inspection...like solid lifters, larger main caps, and the brinnel tested crank.

I would say to be sketical of it being a hi-po, but being that its free, it will be hard to lose out on the deal even if its a 2v 289.

Craig, why? I have one of those!

I guess because there aren't any usable cores left.

My buddy swapped a std/std 289 crank and rods for a 10/10 302 crank and rods and a scad of machine work about 10 years ago because the machinist needed the core.

They only made the 289 for a couple of years. They made the 302 forever by comparision. Why anybody would build a 289 (or worse, a 260) now is beyond me.
