Ok, so i just dropped a new motor in my car, stock rebuild on the bottom end with a .030 overbore, gt-40 heads and explorer intake with E-cam. I didnt research the fact my stock springs were no match for this cam. So, here i am with an assembled engine, in car, needing to swap out my valve springs. I had the heads rebuilt before they went off the car, and i tore them down myself so i am familiar with removing the springs. my problem is, i need the name of the tool used to fill the cylinder with compressed air to keep my valves from dropping into the piston.

If I recall correctly, you can use a leakdown tester to do that.

Ok all jokes aside, you can use the tube off of a compression tester and hook it up to an air hose to get the job done.

here is a question for ya, just how much pressure is the air applying to the valve(not psi) but how hard is it to push the valve down?

well, turns out my dad has one. so i ordered the TFS valve spring kit, and since i was spending more money i ordered the FMS ac delete kit to move my ps pump up. now i just have to go buy a new serp belt.

Indian rope trick:
An alternative to the compressed air trick is to use a length of 3/8" hemp rope. You stick your finger in the spark plug holes and crank the cylinder up until you feel air blow past you finger. Feed the rope down the spark plug hole until you can't get any more of it in the cylinder. Then use a 15/16" socket to crank the harmonic balancer bolt until the cylinder locks solid. The rope will have filled the combustion chamber and is solid against the valves at that point.
