About a week ago I found a 66 coupe in a field. Stopped in and asked the guy if he wanted to sell it. He told me that it was his grandpa's and that he parked it there over 15 years ago after his grandpa died. He said that he would sell it but did not know where any of the paperwork was. I went ahead and bought the car for next to nothing and put it on a flatbed. Now it is sitting in my man cave. I have never done a ground up job before but I'm ready to jump right in.

I spent all day today trying to run the VIN but every site I went to ask's for a 17 number VIN. I know how to check the codes of the VIN, was just wanting to check the registration history. Anyone know a site where I can do this? After that I will have to try to get a title, any advise?
P.S. I do have a bill of sale from the guy.

The car is too old to get a CARFAX type report on and privacy laws will prevent you from getting info from your state's Motor Vehicle Department. Your best lead is to try and go back to talk to the guy's Mom or Dad. Depending on your state, getting a title for a vehicle like this is getting tougher. You could try Broadway Title (see their website). They specialize in this type of problem, but the rules are getting tougher each day due to vehicle theft. Just don't wind up sinking a lot of money into something you can't register.
