Also, I never even mentioned the Heisman, that has no direct impact on NFL success....

Guess I read too much between the lines of your original post, you know, things like "Smith just pulled off the look long enough to get drafted..." which I took as a veiled reference to him winning the Heisman. No big deal.

How many games of Troy did you actually watch? 1? The one where he came in 20 pounds overweight from hitting the banquet circuit and had missed close to half the practices leading up to the game? Obviously everyone at OSU mishandled Troy winning the Heisman and all the time commitments that came with it and we looked horrid against you. If that was the only game you watched of OSU that year, I can see why you're skeptical that Troy was/is a quality QB.

Exactly the situation we are in with Jordan Jefferson. I mentioned him a while back being a "more developed Terrell Pryor" and while the kid is talented he is still 19 years old and not ready for as a starter in big time college football. He takes a 6-7 step drop and instead of stepping up into the pocket when the o-linemen pushes the defenders wide he takes two more steps back and into the rush...he was sacked 6 times against Georgia and 5 against Florida. I can't understand why the coaches can't see that he is not a developed pocket passer and either roll him out or use quick outs and screens. Plus it wouldn't hurt to put his back-up in that started 7 games last season to give him some time to eyeball whats going on every now and then.

Also we have this phenom freshman QB named Russel Sheppard had been getting more and more playing time in the previous games from the "wildcat" and gained 7-10 yards a play...never saw the field against Florida. I can't figure this coaching staff out sometimes.

We don't have the luxury of replacing TP right now. Our O-line is still not very good and his backup is an immobile pocket QB. He'd get eaten alive, similar to what we had with Boeckman the previous 2 years and you saw how well that worked out for us against teams with a strong defensive front 7.

No, I actually watched quite a few games with him in it that year. That's why I said he looked great all year, and was obviously the better athlete for the NFL. I just said that it appeared (again IMO IMO IMO), that he was made to look so good by playing weaker defenses, and that was exposed by UF, and by the NFL. He certainly doesn't look like the stud in the NFL that he was in NCAA, does he? Again, he's a great player, but I just don't think he's the quality of a "great" NFL QB.

But, again, whatever, to each his own.

That can be said about many, many great college QBs as they transition into the NFL. How many Heisman winning or All-American QBs have actually succeeded at the next level? Danny Wuerffel couldn't do it. Heck, the MAC has as many starting QBs in the NFL as the Big Ten or the SEC.

Anyways, the only reason I even brought up Troy was in response to CO's question about OSU's coaching staff and teaching young QBs. Troy came in as a raw athlete, in fact, he was listed as an "athlete" his Freshman year on the roster, not as a QB. He had only played QB 1 year in high school. My point was that OSU's coaching staff can coach QBs and that TP's struggles were less to do with the coaching staff and more to do with what's between TP's ears.

So, does anyone know how the hell Cincinnati got to be ranked #8? Who have they beat, what have they actually done to get this ranking? I don't get it.

They've beaten a bunch of nobody teams this season like Southeast Missouri, Fresno State and Miami of OH. This week they play South Florida, so I'm curious to see how good Cincy actually is (BTW- SF has actually played and beaten a ranked team- FSU)

It's cause all the higher ranked teams have been losing. That's happened to several teams this year, when the ones ahead fall, they move up. Then they lose to someone who challenges them, and drop out (see Miss, for example). Almost happened to Boise State last night (granted BSU beat Oregon, which is respectable now, but I doubt BSU could win that game at this point in time), but they narrowly got by.

Who has Florida or Texas beaten to get their ranking? Prior to beating LSU Florida hadn't played any quality opponents:shrug: Early season rankings are all about history, take Alabama; they got whooped by Utah in the Sugar bowl, yet they start at or near the top 10 whilst Utah starts at 20 something.

Normally I agree about preseason rankings being pretty stupid, and it's pretty much true this year, too. The only thing I can say for UF in their favor is that we DID win it all last year, and returned almost the entire same team (only lost 4 starters on the whole team). That's about as close to "just continuing the season" at the new year as it gets.

Yeah, that's what I was pointing out. Teams that did well last year, or have a history of finishing ranked will get the benefit of the doubt. If you want a poll that just takes into account how your team is playing this year, you would have to wait until at least week 6 IMO. Unfortunately that will never happen though.

Funny part is, they took that into account with the BCS rankings, which come out after this weekend. (i.e. they wait to put them out). Problem is, they include a percentage of the votes from the polls. :(

Playoffs are needed, BAD.

Man UF looks less impressive every week. Ohio State finally exposed (just like the Big 10) for what they are , which is totally average, should be ranked somewhere in the 30's. Texas definitely not looking like the #2/3 team in the country, struggling mightily to beat OU without Bradford. This is gonna be a year where there is no clearcut 1 team IMO, so they will follow the old standard of take the winner of the big 12 and the winner of the SEC and throw them in the title game.

Sadly, I pretty much agree with everything you said. I really hope UF can step up, and stop sucking. Their defense is amazing, and looked great this week, even missing Spikes for most of the game, but they still can't click on offense. If that doesn't start soon, could mean doom for the Gators. Ugh, this season is rough!

I like how LSu beat the team that USC lost to and our only loss was to #1 and we are behind them?

Is this season that rough or did we Gators think it was going to be a cake walk this year ....
Tenn vs Bama this weekend ...will find out a lot about Bama after this game ..

Eh, not sure which way it is. Whatever it is, it's rough for us fans! I'm not sure what has happened to the gators, but they're not playing like they did last year. I'm hoping their #2 ranking in the AP poll is what will fuel them like the loss to Ole Miss did last year. We'll see if that happens/pays off.

As for Bama, I want to see how they do vs a team that doesn't turn the ball over. This weekend was another capitalization on turnovers, as it has been many many times for Bama. Not sure if it's just that Bama forces that many, or they get that lucky, but, either way, it gives them the W's, which are all that matter. This weekend should prove interesting, but I"m still expecting Bama to win solidly.

Well, it's USC, and the poll guys have a hard-on for them as usual, I'm sure...

The Jaybirds dropped a big one to Colorado- that was HILARIOUS. Maybe CU got tired of getting kicked around? They were 1-4 though.

So, my 'Eers are ranked 23, and our starting quarterback is injured. I'm actually quite surprised at the ranking, we will see how it holds up. I can usually count on them to choke as soon as they are starting to look good.
