i was looking at jegs today and it had a holley tbi efi system. i was thinking about upgrading from a carb to this. how dependable and how much better would this be than my untuned DP 650 carb. it is a speed density sytem. the kit coster 1500 bucks. would this work with cam upgrades and things like this.

yes...it will work and it is tuneable but from what ive heard unless youre good at tuning stuff like that it can be a real pain in the ass. it would be a step up from the carb as far as driveability...but if youre gonna spend that kind of money youre better off just going back to factory efi

i have it on my 347 and i love it, ive used it for 6 years now and i think its great, where else can you get a complete fuel injection setup that will feed approx 600 hp(natrualy asperated), totally tunable fuel and spark, easily calibrated for 1,2,or 3 bar map sensors for up to 30 lbs of boost, free programs for various engines and cam designs, blown or natrually asperated from holley off they're website, doesnt need a certain amount of vacume to operate like the eec IV; you think you could match that with a eec IV setup for that amount of money, guess again, if you start with a freee factory fuel setup and get a larger tb,mass air, injectors, manifold, fuel pump, your over the cost of the holley setup, but with the eecIv your still stuck with the crapy factory programming parimiters that you try to fool with sample tubes, and mass air voltage tweecers, to get it to run right you need an aftermarket computer to take advantage of the performance potential of the expensive accessories you purchased for the factory setup, i have it in my ranger and im running 12.2 @ 114 @ 3,000lbs, through an aod, 3.90 gears, this winter im building a twin turbo blow thru setup for use with the projection

its probly easier than most of the piggyback and stad alone sytems on the market,as with any fuel injection swap, there is a learning curve involved, but once you have it figured out the skys the limit and the holley projection is your best bang for the buck out there, has the top end charge of a carb with the drivability and mileage of the factory fuel injection; eith the tuneability of an expensive stand alone system, and its wide band o2 upgradeable thru holley

get the 900 cfm 4 bbl setup, they all use the same 4 bbl throttle body but they use three different injector sizes(thats where they get the hp rating from), if you get the largest one, you can dial the fuel "out" then add it down the road when you make modifications, i have the unit with the 85lb injectors wich will support 600hp, and im running them at 50% more pressure (they are rated for 20 psi), so at 30 psi of fuel pressure they will feed approx. 800+ wich will feed anything i will ever do with out needing to upgrade injectors or throttle body, dont bother with the 2 bbl, the 4 bbl is the one you want so spend the couple extra bucks, when you get it get in contact with me and i can write or help you with your programming, the other nice thing about the projection is if you change your combo you can just switch intakes, your not stuck with some fuely intake that cost you 400+ bucks that you cant get ride of, and you never need to ugrade components like tb,mass air, injectors, chips etc again, so its way cheaper in the long run

Holley TBI Newbie. so far so good

So what are my thoughts on the Holley 650 4-bbl TBI ?

Right now I am putting the Holley system on my Ford 390. The motorcraft carb died, Edlebrock aftermarket carb sucked too, jetting a mile off, etc, so the Holley EFI is the only logical alternative...a very sophisticated, turn key system, fully engineered, can't wait to fire it up !

My only question so far, for you guys, the experienced ones, is this:

I find the Holley wiring harnesses very bulky, and propose to mount the ECU box, relays, basically everything, in the trunk, and fab a new, much slimmer wiring harness to go from the trunk to the engine.

Holley's manual says to mount the ECU in the glove compartment, and cut a 2" hole in the firewall to pass thru the supplied bulky harness, I don't like that idea at all.

I can make an extension harness for only the wires that connect to the engine (I can cut the wire count from about 50 wires to 18 wires) connect the oxygen sensor separately, and pass this new, slim harness thru a 1/2" hole, but the wires from the trunk to the engine will be 4 or 5 times longer than the Holley harness. Any thoughts about if the resistive losses in the longer wires will affect the operation of the EFI ??

Other than my wiring issues, the Holley systems is great. I assembled it on the dinner table, hooked it up the to the Laptop, and tested all the components.

Works great.

May the 4-bbl carburetor rest in peace !
