I crawled under the good ol' Capri the other day to find out that the 255 powered Capri is rolling on a 2.26 rear gear! I thought the '83 was bad with the 2.73, but 2.26?!?!? I'm not sure if I'll ever drive on that rear, but it should turn that 4-banger trans into a 200mph flying machine if I can manage enough torque. Maybe I need to drop that Windsor in now instead of later...

how did you determine this? Did you just look at the tag? I've never heard of a 2.26 gear.

Tag. The car is all original, so I am not doubting the tag. However I think I am going to peruse the Capri literature and see if that was an option...

I would count the driveshaft vs tire rotations to come up with a more accurate value. I highly doubt they would put something that high in a v8...nevermind a 4 banger. I just dont see that happening.

After some research, the 2.26 is correct.

Gotta love Ford and it's struggle for fuel economy in the 80;s

There really was a 2.26 non T-lok ring gear for the 7.5" axle in the early fox years

Yep, they had 2.26's and 2.47's.

My 79 5.0 Capri Ghia came stock with the 2.47.

I now have a 2.73, and wish I had the 2.47 back for gas mileage.

Oddly, my 80 Capri 255 donor car came with a 3.08!

A buddy put many miles on a McClaren Mustang 5.0 conversion with a 2.26 rear and an FMX trans!
