Hey Guys,

Yesterday the handle to the hood broke off. I was thinking about hood pins. Is there a recommended hood pin set you guys use? I want the ones with the cable locks? I found one on ebay but I wanted to run it past you guys to see if its worth purchasing. Any pro's and con's about using hood pins? Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks

Try the motorsport hood pins. they are stainless steel and come with vinyl covered cables if you choose to use them. I didn't, I thought they might scuff my paint. Part # M-16700-A, $36.95, at summit. I am real happy with my pins, good to know my hood isn't going to fly up and trash the windshield at 100 mph...

I had some cheap autozone ones on my old mustang... i'd definatly suggest goin' with stainless, otherwise they rust VERY quick.. Also, becareful when pulling the pins out, it's very easy to scratch the hood which SUCKS.... You also may want to check out zeus fasteners, I've never used em, but I know many people who swear by them.

I will take a look at the Ford Racing ones. If I decided to get the hood pins, do I have to remove the latch, since the cable is busted? What are the steps in doing it right the first time?

I wouldn't use hood pins as your primary hold-down source for the hood. They should only be a secondary safety thing. The reason I say this is because for the pins to hold the hood down completely tight, like the stock latch would, you'll have to adjust the pins where they are flush with the hood. This will make them really tight and hard to get in and out and you WILL scratch the scuff plates and the hood's paint. I used to have mine tight like that and the plates and paint got scratched all up real quick. Now I have them about 1/2" up from the hood... so they are easy to get in and out, don't touch the hood at all, and will catch the hood if the latch ever pops loose... which HAS happened.
Also, with only pins holding the hood down, any Joe-Shmoe out at a parking lot can remove the pins, steal the pins, steal anything in your engine bay, or even steal the hood it'self! Those locking pins are not meant to act as regular hood pins, only as a lock. They are not for safety, they say so themselves. So you would have to have two regular hood pins, then the locking pins also. Four pins on the front of the hood? I wouldn't want that.
I have a hood latch cable/handle/etc in my garage full of parts from my wrecked 90' GT. Let me know if you're interested in getting it to fix yours.
Hope this helps!

BADPONYsc,

Thanks for braking it down. The hood latch cable/handle/etc that you have is it in good working condition? Nothing is damaged, just making sure. How much do you want for it?

Oh, I dunno'... How's $15 shipped? I went out and dug around to see what all's involved with the hood latch mechanism and it seems that if something broke, it would be somewhere within the cable it'self.... either the handle, somewhere inside the cable sleeve, or the little metal ball at the other end of the cable that attaches to the latch. I snapped a pic of it which I'll attach below.
Let me know if you think that's what you need and if you want it.
Hope this helps!
