Hood pins... talk to me.

I've had my cobra hood hit the safety latch twice now in 7 years. With the new engine combo, I'm ready to make sure I don't hit lucky number 3.

What brand/style do I want? I don't want some that will start rusting after I open the package. Do I want the wires or not?

And YES, I'm getting hood pins. So no trying to talk me out of it because they are "ugly".

Subcribed....i also was looking for pins cuz I have a china made hood that wobles at high speeds and always scares me....

Ive got the Mr. Gasket ones from Jegs...besides the fact that some ******* stole one of them, I am satisfied. They sit more flush with the hood than the traditional clip style pins.

i purchased a set thru ford, but i ended up not using them, went a different route... but my buddy who is putting my 4inch cowl on his car is getting a set that the key stays on the hood... i would probably go with somethin like that...

i originally purchased ones w/ the cord that is attached to the key... from what i hear, itll rub agaisnst the paint and cause wear marks... jsut my .02 that probably made NO sense what so ever LOL...

Mr. Gasket 1017 - Mr. Gasket Hood Pins

Parrt Number- 720-1017

When i installed them i removed the rubber hood bumpers on the top of the radiator support. I then drilled out the hole big enough for the post. Then i welded one of the nuts to the rad support, screwed in the post, then tightened the 2nd nut against the one welded to the rad support. I then put some toothpaste on the tops of the posts, and closed the hood til it touched the toothpaste. Then i drilled out the hood from the bottom with a TINY bit so i wouldnt chip the paint since i was drilling from the bottom out. Then i got bigger bits and drilled from the top down til i got the posts to line up right, and til the hood closed. Then i adjused the posts to the right height and wala! Good luck.

i have the locking Mr. Gasket ones w/ the circular-type lock (not sure what it's called). they are pretty heavy duty and come w/ a rubber padding that goes between the saucer and the hood in order to prevent scratches. my hood doesn't latch so pins were a must, but these were the only ones i felt comfortable going w/ simply because they lock.

Get the FRPP setup it is all stainless steel. I removed the rubber bump stops and put the pins in that spot. I use some big rubber vacuum hose as the hood stop that is around the pins.

No you dont have to weld them. I have FRPP ones and like them. No that I learned a new trick though, I would go another route which doesnt involve going through the hood of the car, but offers the same safety....and stock. Illustration to come later.

So basically you cut some hose to the right length and it is slide over the pins, the hood can only go so far then stops when it hits the hose? That sounds like that might work really good. I definitely want stainless steel if I can get it.

Also intrigued about BlueOvalStangGT idea.

yep just measured the diameter of the pins and went to O'Reilys and bougt 6" of that size diameter hose. cut them to the height you need for the hood slide them over the pins and magic hood stops.

Very cool. I was worried about removing the factory stops. Sounds like a great solution. Thanks!

I saw a very trick set of hood pins on corral. They are called Aerocatch hood pins. I think they are unique and a nice alternative to the traditional style hood pin. I don't know very much about them but here are a couple pics the guy posted and a link to his thread about them.

If you don't go with the above, I would at least be sure to go with stainless, I wouldn't want something rusty on my hood IMO.

That's what Chrysler did with the 69 1/2 440-6 Road Runners and Super Bees with the black fiberglass lift-off hood. I had hood pins on my '03 Mach 1. I bought the stainless kit from Ford racing and didn't use the lanyards. I took out the hood bumpers and put the hood pins there using washers and 2 nuts so I could adjust the height of the pin and tighten it down. If I remember right, on the Mach the pins weren't long enough after I mounted them to go through the hood enough for me to put the clip in, so I had to get creative with some threaded rod and threaded sleeves . If I were to do it again, I'd order the Ford Stainless kit like I did, but I wouldn't use the pins that come with it. I would order some pins out of a Year One catalog for an old Mopar with hood pins. Different models had different length pins (say Charger vs. Dart). Can't remember what model has the ones longer than the Ford pins, but if you look into you'll find out.

Ok, I got you guys some pics. Basically, my buddy has the pins going from the hood down into the rad support or whatever that is.I dont know how he got the bolt on the back of the pin in the hood, but he did. The pins are more in the middle of the hood compared to like what other people have on here, so they pop out right by the mustang emblem. When he needs to pop his hood he just reaches in there and he is good to go. Hood pin protection with a nice clean look.
