im having a machine shop rebuild my 1986 5.0 roller t-bird motor.
he's rebuilding the bottom end and going .30 over. he's also swapping the timming cover and stuff needed to be a carbed for my 1982 thunderbird.
i would like to get 300 or more at the wheels. i have a new 650 edlebrock and a cheapo typhoon duel-plane intake. im going to need pistons and a cam for him to put in and im not going with any power adders so cast or cheap-as-possible will do. what is the least exspensive way to get 300 or more hp at the wheels with iron gt40 heads without valve and reliability issues. i dont have too much to spend, thats why im asking you guys so i dont buy the wrong mods or mis match stuff and wind up spending more fixing problems.

also the t-bird has aod so would i need a higher stall converter? it would be a daily driver that i can have fun at the track every now and then.
thanks

FEM-MHP174-300 Is a Summit Racing rebuild kit, it has nearly all you will need... check it out $330.00

As far as cam goes, depends on some other things, what rear gear do you have, what trans, what weight? My only suggestion would be to add more compression to help you to your goal, but with a GT40 head my guess is your 61-64cc+ which will put you in the high 8.7:1 range. I would ask to see if they have a dome option, a 8cc dome would get you around 10.3:1+ depending on the cc of your head.

You may also want to see if your machinest can get you a kit similar to what the Summit kit is. On a budget this method is the best way to go... You could call COMP to see what shelf grind they recommend

Look at Edge Racing Converters, More Horsepower with More Torque Guaranteed! Andre has some great options for the AOD. edgeracingconverters.com

cool, i did find a set of pistons that jegs said would give me 10:1 on a 64cc gt40
there Keith Black/KB Pistons KB116, looks to be a slight dome to em. the jegs guy also said a e303 cam would clear the valve issues with those pistons and i wouldnt need a torqu converter with that cam. sound right? or would a 2200-2400 stall be woth it?
would i have to run 92 oct gas with 10:1?

forgot! the rear gear im going with would be a 3.55 so i can get some fuel mialage on the highway, the rearend is a 7.5 and i plan on putting a ford racing track lock in it. the car's factory curb weight is 3,166 pounds

A converter would definitely help, the stock converters are not performance oriented..
