Horn Not Working...Related to Airbag Codes?

Mainly all that's left on the engine swap are a few final parts install, tuning, and addressing any engine codes.

Tried to get the horn working Saturday and NO luck.

The horn itself is good (tested outside of car). All fuses and relays are good. We get nothing when we press the steering wheel.

At the same time we are still getting airbag code 32. Is it possible that there is a grounding issue that is causing both?

Are these 2 issues completely UNrelated?

What is the next thing to try?

Thanks

Do continuity testing on the horn button. If it passes, check the horn relay to see if the signal is reaching it (IIRC, the horn sends a ground pulse to the relay. The positive-coil and common terminals have constant 12 volts).

As noted by SVT above, there's a good chance the two issues are related.

Sorry, I dont know what that means.

If you put a DMM on each side of one of the horn buttons (set to measure resistance (the 200 ohm scale is fine), with the button at rest your meter should read open circuit (often depicted with an I on your screen). Push the horn button and the reading should drop to a reasonable reading (less than 100 ohms, though I'd have to look up the actual spec. It would not matter because we'd move to testing the same signal at the relay next anyhow).
If this continuity doesnt occur, the relay doesnt 'know' that you're hitting the horn button.

The only reason I brought that up is that I've seen the horn button pads wear and the horn would not activate. In other words, the meter would always read I, even if the button was mashed through the steering wheel.

Just be very careful when working on this, as you're close to the airbag wiring.

And I still think it's a clockspring issue. :)

replace the clockspring and it will fix your issue. My clock spring went out. And the same day got an airbag code and my horn malfuntioned. So get a clockspring NOT FROM FORD cuz they want my 401k to fix it. and get a haynes and fix it yourself easy job with time and paitence just make sure to unhook the battery you dont want the airbag going off in your face.

Where would YOU suggest I get the clockspring?

Only reason I havent REALLY considered THAT the issue is that it was working fine before the engine swap, and we did nothing in that area to screw it up...could just be coincidence?

Thanks

IT's gone, and I was advised not to get a used one or junk yard one because of the incidence of most going bad eventually.

When you gonna come over?

lol. I have no idea man. I swear soon as I get a day I will call you first thing. And you could get a j/y or used clock spring if its dirt cheap to resolve for now. Not hard at all to replace. Till you can go buy a new one or you may never have to buy a new one. lol. Of course clockspring cant come out of a mustang with air bad deployment because obviously clock spring is junk after air bag deployment.

I dont have a problem purchasing a new one if my current one is bad. Im just not sure how to test to see if it IS bad. If you can help me figure how to test it, and it comes up bad, then I WILL just drive over to the dealer and buy it.

CALL me when you can make it over...Im off NEXT weekend, then for 10 days from 10/31 through 11/11.

dealer, only cost about $60 or so. i just changed mine about 2 months ago.

Not too bad.

Got an update: Ive been busy so havent worked on the car, but I talked to my "general mechanic" friend that was just too busy with his shop to help with the car, but he told me this:

When we took off the power steering rack and replaced it, the turning of the steering wheel could during alignment and reassembly may have messed up the clock spring. He also said that that DEFINITELY would make the horn not work also. The only reason this tidbit is important is because we were sitting there trying to figure out how the clockspring was fine before the engine swap and not after...We thought it was either something else, or just coincidence.

This friend of mine (owns his own general shop) is going to get me a price for HIM to get the clockspring for me.

Will keep you posted.

WOW...I dont know where you got that price, but I called dealers all around me today, and they are on BACK ORDER (all dealers) and their price is $142.

Im ordering new carpet and Steering wheel from Late Restoration.

They want $100.

Please tell me if this is the right one:

95-98 CLOCKSPRING, AIR BAG MUSTANG

It says 95-98, but I find it hard to believe it would be a different one. I want to place my order THIS Friday.

Thanks
