how big of cam can the stock springs take?

i know my e7s wont benifit from anything other than a stock cam but my 331 will be getting afr 185 soon (summer) and i want to go ahead and put a cam in the car that the 185s can benifit from yet keep my e7 springs from giving way. I was thinking an e303 cam but then i got to wondering if the springs could handle an f cam for awhile. This is by no means my daily driver and i have a truck and trailor i use to take it to the track so it will not see much street time.....so what can i get away with guys?

i wouldn't try it with anything bigger than the e......and even that may be pushing it if their old springs and you wind it up.........what you don't want is the valves to float at high rpm....with a bigger cam even you may have valve spring retainer issues with the lift, etc, although im sure someone else knows the exact specifics on what you absolutly should not try.....my guess would be for sure no bigger than an e.....especially if your draggin it, the lift on the e is what .500 something isn't it??

well i dont plan on reving that high...yet! now with the g force t5 and the afr 185s i plan on revving to 6500

well i wouldn't risk running too much of a cam with the stock springs.last thing you want is those valves floating into your new stroker pistons....

thats what i was thinking....i guess i could always buy a bigger cam this summer with the afrs

if i upgraded the springs on my e7s would they swap over the afrs without a problem?

i don't know theres rocker and retainer and installed spring height you need to check......which may very from e7 to afr...not sure dont have the answers.....

You're wasting your time and money -- the stock springs are marginal even for the stock cam -- valve float with the stock cam is not uncommon. Patience -- get your 185's and then upgrade the cam.

You're wasting time and money trying to upgrade the springs on the E7's.....

Your cam choice should be made relative to your other components and what you want the engine to do. With the increased displacement of a 331 the stock HO cam is going to be even milder -- great idle quality, great drivability, and it will perform great. With those heads feeding a 331 and the stock HO cam it should make a great, torquey street/strip/autocross engine.

But more peak power is available from a different camshaft choice with an afr185-headed 331. If that's what you want - go for it. Or stick with the stock cam. Only you can decide that.

But you're wasting your money upgrading the E7's to put a different cam in now.

There are stock cammed cars out there both boosted, juiced and naturally aspirated running in the 11's and 12's. Just remember - it's the WHOLE package that runs the times -- not just a function of the camshaft in the car.

The stock springs when new, will do the job they were designed to do, with a little left over. A stock spring with 15 years of service and over with 100,000 miles on it running on a hot roller cam is asking for problems.

I'd add a stock spring 15 years old with 100k on it is asking for trouble with the STOCK cam....

You aren't going to see any NA 331 cars with afr 185's running 10's with the stock cam.
Possibly could even be done with a custom cam.

You are speaking of supercharged cars probably.

i had the money laid out for the afr setup but school tuition went up .....so it would be best off just running the stock valvetrain until i get the afrs and a cam worthy of the afrs company?
