got a question about finding a chip in my 98 cobra. When I bought it from the dealer they said it had an aftermarket chip and some of the locals said the guy who owned it b4 me had put a diablo chip in it. SO i went directly to the guy who owned b4 me and asked him and he said he couldnt remember if it was a diablo or a superchip. If i take the passenger side kick panel off will i be able to see the diablo chip? I ve heard these chips go completly inside the computer? but dont the suprchips plug into the back of the computer and is it possible to see any of this without fully removing the kick panel??? cuz it s a pain in the butt! ive had the panel removed partially and i saw that it had a vortech computer, i guess because of the suprcharger? does that come with the kit any one know??? if possible please email [email protected]...your knowledge is greatly appreciated. thanks guys

If its chipped you should be able to remove the computer and verify visually. The aftermarket chips almost always plug into the service port on the EEC. I promise you that if a supercharged car was built by anyone other than monkeys with wrenches it has some sort of aftermarket tuning provided to tell the car what the hell is going on under the hood.

Sorry, but the only way to find out what chip you have is to pull the kick panel and drop the computer. The chip installs on the top edge of the computer and can not be seen unless you remove it. It takes 10 minutes...

They plug into the diagnostic connector just like any other chip. You will be able to see it once you drop the PCM. Make sure it is completely seated before you put it back though or you could be in for an unwelcome surprise... :nice:

vortech's supercharger kit for '98 came with a "vortech/superchip" ecm. you can verify this by going on vortechs website under '96-'98 cobra parts list (i thinks it's like page 3 that says that you have to call and order the chip but it is already included in the price). it says if you want to drive your car before the chip is mailed to you it's ok as long as you don't get in the higher rpm's (4,200-up). i would think the chip is a superchip but who knows. good luck.

found the info.... go under vortech website, click on support, click on installation manual for '96-98 cobra and then scroll down a few pages. he may have gone with another chip at some point but most likely it has the superchip in it.

Thanks for the info guys. I will take a look at the website. If the superchip thing and the 4200rpm thing is true then it definetly has a chip or my motor wouldve been blown long ago :D

Another tip that is often forgotten: Be sure to disconnect your battery before disconnecting any wires from that EEC if you have to.
