How can you tell if a iat is going bad

The one on my Mustang has never gone bad but the one on my truck (Ranger) is bad. On my truck, it makes a moaning/blowing in a coke bottle sound, sometimes idles like crap, and the RPM's fluctuate sometimes when I first start it. I just don't want to drop a C-note on one ...

I just noticed that you said "IAT" so my bad about giving you info regarding the IAC. When my IAT sensor went bad I threw a check engine code.

What in a failing IAC would make it howl like that?

I think it is some spring sticking open or shut ... dunno really.

An IAT is only like 10 bucks (if that) ... Autozone is where I got mine. You can also try taking the sensor out and spraying the little diode thing (whatever it's called) with electrical spray cleaner. That or go buy a new one.

Not 10 for a Ford iat and I wouldn't use anything else. The iat mainly controls timing. When its cold it runs more when its hot less. You would probably throw a check engine light and would be down on power.
