How can you tell if your car is pinging?

Just recently set my car from 10 base to 15, but my exhaust is so loud how do you know if its running OK at that timing mark? the car pulls hard and doesnt buck or hesitate.. does that mean im in the clear? I run 91 Shell octane with V power <-- lol

Are those the only mods you have. If so, it doesn't matter. The engine doesn't make enough power to hurt itself. As long as it feels good, you're fine.

Yeap those are the only mods as of now. Well pinging is detonation right? and detonation is very harmful to the pistons isnt it ? The question still remains.. how can you tell if your car is pinging under load?

Honestly, you'd probably hear it, especially more so with the windows up. It almost sounds like marbles in a coffee can full of oil. That's about the best way I can describe it anyway.

Well I would argue with Kurt that detonation can hurt any engine at any horsepower.

Before a TwEECer I was running 13 base on 87 octain and did not get detonation. Sometimes you just get lucky with a car that runs colder. I also had a 180 degree thermostat.

You'll definitely hear it when it happens though, and I ran straight back to flowmasters which is not quiet.

My car has been pinging when it's hot out for 10 years now. It still runs fine. Pinging is a light almost clacky sound. It's sometimes called spark knock. If the detonation was bad enough to do any damage, you'd hear it. You ever notice how older diesel engines kind of make a clacking when they run. That's detonation. They have to detonate a little because the way the fuel ignites.

pinging sounds like BB's in a soda can. mine only did it when the coolant temp was hi enough to turn on the cooling fan. At the time i was running 87 octane. i stepped up to mid grade fuel and have not heard it sense. i'm also only running 12* timing, so it varies from car to car.

I good way to avoid pinging with a stock setup is use mid to high octane fuel and use a 180* thermostat. I have my timing set to 13* with a 180* and never had any pinging at all. If you notice ping on 87 octane....try buying some octane boost and see if it goes away, if not try retarding your timing a little bit.

@ 15* it seems to run really good. It was about 80 degrees yesterday when i went for a test run after setting base timing and I didnt hear any pinging sounds. But I do have the weirdest "whistle" sound when i go WOT?????!
