how do I get a stock whiny sounding starter?

how about a stock replacement? just specify that you don't want a mini starter, although my mini starter has a unique whine to it as well

just walk into any auto store and ask for a pre-1992 ford 5.0 mustang starter

My '92 style mini starter sounds whinier than my old OEM '91 starter. Now 80's SBC's sound really whiny when they start... or trying to start.

Hmmm... the sound of my reman starter sounds different than my dads OEM 5.0 Explorer starter, and they use the same starter part #.
..But I dont care about what tone, just as long as it starts...

HAH funny you said that.I went so far out of my way to keep that sound I ended up rebuilding my original. ($15.00 from autozone) word of advice don't take out the solid brass bearing that's in the nose of it. They don't match up.I had to search high and low for it.Worth the hunt, but you can reuse the thing it shouldn't have much wear on it,and all your really rebuilding is the brushes and bottom bearing..:D

I just remember the way my first Mustang sounded when it would crank over...it was an '88 GT. The sound kinda got engraved in my mind and now every time i start a Mustang i look for that sound but it isn't there.

The odd thing is my buddy's GT does have a similar sound (forgot to add, his starter is a rebuilt from Autozone) so i wonder if it's more about the GT body and sound deadening changing what you hear inside the car? My coupe is loud as hell but then i don't have sound deadening or carpet so the starter is just on the other side of some sheet metal.

I just put a mini starter in my 88. I wouldnt have but my exhaust is welded and I had to lift my motor and beat the big bulky one out, it was heat soaked. I was hoping a mini would be better, but it was still a pain in the a**. Car starts alot better though. Check out ebay or craigslist. There are a bunch on craigslist in Michigan for under $20. Detroit/Metro area.
