o.k., i'm a fairly new owner of a stang, and i went to get a key made....$27.50 for the key i can live with. But $80 to program it!!!
#$#*^% that! so i'd appreciate it if someone could tell me the procedure, I know it cant be hard.

thanx

Maybe someone can elaborate but I'm pretty sure it has to do with something like:

Turn your programmed key in the on position without turning on the car, take it out and put the blank key in , etc.

I don't know the specifics of it but I remember reading how to do it a few years back and it was easy as pie.

I'm sure someone will jump in on how specifically to do it, in the meantime, do a search.

I found it, but you need two keys!! and of course, I have 1 !!

Here are the instructions if anyone needs them

Adding Duplicate Keys (Requires two working keys)

1. Insert one valid programmed key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the "ON" position, then back to "OFF", remove key.

2.Within 5 seconds insert the second valid programmed key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the "ON" position, then back to "OFF".

3. Remove the key and insert the new key into the ignition cylinder and turn to the "ON" position within 10 seconds. Leave the key in the "ON" position for at least 1 second, then turn back to "OFF".

4. A security light should light for three seconds to indicate successful programming.

5. For additional keys repeat above steps.

Honk twice, open and close doors at same time 3 times, winnshield wipers on full, turn on radio on full blast, step out of car run around it counter clock wise 2 times, get back in the car and drive to closest ford dealership.

Um, dude... You are supposed to honk THREE times in the first step there. You must be thinking of the old technique for the fox bodies with DA PATS ;)

If those are dealer prices, you're getting hosed. I've worked for several locksmiths here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and we charged 125.00 to come out and make and program a key from scratch. If you came to the shop price with key was about 45.00. Since you can drive the car and already have a cut key, let your fingers do the walking and find a local locksmith shop and see what they'll charge to program it.

I wasn't aware that a locksmith can program a key, anyway I could use an extra 1 for my wifes car as we only have 1 key and dealer said that we have to drive the car there us they need to hook up their computer to the car to get the codes, not sure what that's all about. BTW that is for an 01 Explorer

TakesTo ADD two new keys takes maybe 10 minutes .
The computer has to be cleared of the two old keys, then it can accept the new key.
From there you can add up to 8 total.

Thats why it pays to awlays have 3 keys for a PATS car.

SOMBODY with a Stang has to work at the dealer that can hook you up.

(this is from memory, 6000 miles from home in the field)

$80.00? I paid 26 for my key and 32 to have it programmed. That was at a Ford dealer. :nonono: Oh the good ole days when you could have a key made for a dollar...................

You have a 98? You just need 1 key. Do what was described above. Insert old key...turn on ignition...turn off and remove. Within 15 seconds insert new key and turn on. The theft light will illuminate for 2 seconds. Key is programmed. Up to 16 keyys can be used. If key codeing failed the theft light will flash. This means that all 16 keys have been used...did not insert new key within 15 secs. or the key is not a coded key.
