Alright, im sure this is posted everywhere, but i can't find the dam/\/ search link. Can someone help me on how to adjust the TV cable on an AOD. My tranny is making car shake really bad when downshifting out of Overdrive. It doesn't want to downshift, i usually have to do it manually, put it in neutral, or it will eventually downshift but it shakes really hard first, like i'm riding over railroad tracks. Also if i apply the brakes fairly hard it will work. It's pretty weird. Could it have something to do with a vacuum line? I think I can hear one leaking, or perhaps one is uncapped. Thanks

Not sure if adjusting your TV cable is going to cure the problem you have, but if you want to try...

The proper way to adjust it is to put a low value pressure guage onto the TV porton the tranny. The cable needs to be set so that the gauge reads zero at idle, but jumps up the second the throttle is advanced even the slightest bit.

You will also hear that it should be adjusted so that the TV pressure reads 2 - 5 psi at idle. This is OK too since a little too much TV is better than too little.

If you can't get a pressure guage on it, you ca try this: Remove the TV cable and the adjuster from the throttle linkage. Release the adjuster (how you do this depends on what year you have) so the cable slides through it. Pull the cable forward until it stops, and hold it. Now move the throttle linkage full forward (open). Snap the adjuster back onto the linkage -- you may need an extra pair of hands to help do this. This should also lock the adjuster (not sure about earlier AODs).

You'll be running a slightly high TV this way, but it'll work good enough until you can get it to a shop to have it adjusted properly.

it's a '91, and someone on another thread, told me it sounded like the tv cable. i'm not sure what it is...if you know let me know, i have taken it to 2 tranny shops and both said it's not the tranny, they think it could be a sensor? perhaps a vacuum line too? i have no idea! but it's starting to drive me nuts.

Based on what he described in his other thread I suggested he look at it and make sure it's right. I can't tell if its that or not, but many problems can be traced to the TV cable with the AOD.

I'm going to start putting a disclaimer with my responses....

"It is impossible to diagnose a problem online. Any info I give is merely a suggestion from my experience and the conditions you described. I recommend you take your problem to a qualifed mechanic if you cannot figure out and repair the problem yourself. Other conditions may be contributing too, or causing your issue."

I've got the same problem here, and I think part of it has to do with the fact I performed the AOD shuffle at the track (D-1-D). For a while, it refused to upshift until the point I was reving at 5 grand but now it refuses to downshift until the car almost stalls out.

maybe that is a bad convertor that keeps wanting to stay locked. i had a grand am that would not unlock the convertor and everytime i stopped i had to put it in N and then rev it and slam it in gear to burn out and go, this quickly overrevved the engine because it delayed getting into gear once and made the valves start to knock, then on the way home i stepped on it and dropped a valve and tht was the end of that problem. never get any pontiacs or saturns
