just like the title says, im talking stock for stock and then modding with about the same amount of money and which one can be modded more, which has more potential. just curious how these 2 motors compare to eachother and how a 88-93 5.0 stang compares to a 99-04 and the 05 and 06 stangs.

thanks

Stock for stock: 05-06> 99-04> 87-93, however you'll find few enthusiasts leave their Mustangs "stock" ....as far as modding goes, you will find the general consenus around here gives the 5.0 the nod for cheapest to modify and most aftermarket support. And while the 5.0 was by far the least graced in terms of factory performance (iron truck heads, diminutive induction, choked exhaust, tall gears, etc) you'll find they respond very well to bolt-ons and have tons of potential. If a new car is your thing the new 4.6 3V platform offers 300 horsepower right out of the box and responds very well to basic bolt-ons and a tune....they also come equipped with a much stronger frame than the Fox-platform they replaced.

This is an age old debate...i bet if you search back far enough you'll find 100 threads on 5.0 vs. 4.6. The answer is simple....DEPENDS ON MONEY. If you wanna talk in engineering talk, the 4.6 is far superior, but again the things that it's better at can be taken care of with enough money invested into a 5.0. The biggest advantage a 4.6 has is 4 valve/DOHC heads. Second IMO would be that the crank is almost entirely inside the block, as opposed to the 5.0 where about half of it sticks out the bottom...this makes the 4.6 stronger and it also doesnt deal with oil windage causing drag on the crank like a 5.0 does. I don't know if everyone would agree but i see 4.6s hold more boost than a stock block 5.0 too.

My mostly stock mach 1 beats my 93 in EVERY category hands down except fun factor. Now if my 93 had mach 1 brakes and suspension and about 300 rwhp I think my mach would be a garage queen. Thats actually my goal one day to fix up the 93 so I dont have to drive the mach 1 to work except on nice days....but first I need a garage, brakes, springs, and about 100rwhp before that happens

stock for stock the 5.0 will lose everytime(unless the 99+ gt misses a gear)

the 5.0 can recive more mods if the same is spent on both cars.

stock 5.0= 190ish rwhp(225bhp)
Stock NI 4.6= 190ish rwhp(215bhp)
stock PI 4.6= 230ish rwhp(260bhp
stock 05/06= 290ish rwhp(300bhp)

4.6's blocks are good to 800+ rwhp easy.....

Another point i was thinking of on my drive home.

The 4.6L is much more of a highway cruiser. I was just loving how smooth and silky the engine was as i cruised along in 5th gear doing 80MPH only turning 2000RPM. The car just loves open highway. From 60-120 it's an animal.

I commute 60 miles highway each day to work, and drive my 4.6 and love it.

The 5.0 on the other hand with 3.73's hates the hgihway. It's just not good in the upper revs and 80MPH is loud as hell.

In my 4.6L, even with an aftermarket exhaust, you would never know you were doing 90MPH with the windows up and the radio on. It's just that smooth at speed. I've cruised at 110 and felt the same way. You would think you were doing 60

I still like the fact you can pay off a 5.0 pretty easily compared to newer cars and not have to purchase full coverage insurance. Thus resulting in more mod money unless you buy one in need of lots of maintenance. I'm pretty sure though investing 4k into a fox sets you well into the 12's and lower. That's how I've always looked at it atleast when comparing the 5.0 to the newer stuff.

However, the 4.6 is DOG SLOW on low end. When you hit 3500 rpm it feels like a turbo kicked in but until you hit that majik number, slow. Almost nothing will keep up on low end with a 5.0 except a shivy camaro.

Yup, under 3000RPM there is nothing. I remember when i first got my 4.6L i was "testing" it out and was punching it at 1500 and shifting at 4000 and wondering why i wasn't going anywhere.

Then i figured our you have to rev it to get it to move. Hold it at 3000RPM in 2nd and punch it and wow does it move.

The price of the new stuff has come way down. $10K will buy you a pretty decent PI GT. I was asking $13K for my GT, but decided i like it too damn much and am going to keep it and buy a beater Wrangler to drive this winter. $10-15K isn't a whole hell of a lot of money to spend on a new(er)car, but it is still more than a decent FOx. You could buy the Fox and mod it to hell for the price of buying a stock PI GT.

I'm screwed over both ways as I have a money pit modded Fox and a 4 year old GT. Luckily i hold the titles to both cars. The only money i put into the GT is gas money. It's just a fun daily driver.

I have the car in my sig, my fiance has a 97 GT vert that is almost stock (catback, shifter, CAI). I'll agree they are a better highway cruiser, but even with my 3.73's I'd rather be in my fox. That is, unless it's really hot out and I want a/c (which my car now lacks).

I think the NPI motor feels dead below 4k rpms, and even at those rpms it's down on torque. It feels like you really have to give it hell to spin the tires.
