I now have the cash for the mods I would like to get. My 88 stang is mosty stock. I am planning to get 165's AFR heads and a vortech supercharger. In my garage is my saleen/vortech intake and vortech aftercooler just sitting there. My car has to smog so should I keep the stock cam in or is this just dumb?

I know that when I do the heads it's the best time for the cam but I read a thing a long time ago that the stock cam is not that bad for a supercharger.

I know with a turbo they say a stock cam is good. But with a supercharger it's a totally different ballgame.

If you have to pass "Cali" emissions I would be really leary. Maybe look at a custom cam.

So what are you looking to do with the car? What kind of numbers/times do you want to see? Are you willing to give up some driveability for more power? I cant beleive people are making recommendations with absolutely zero knowledge of your expectations

I would be fine giving up some driveability for more power. The big thing is the cal-emissions. I am thinking of running around 10psi or more. The car has about 94000 on it and it's a weekend street car.

Set the stock cam up 4 degrees retarded and it will help a good deal. The SC should help the car pull higher in the RPM range where the heads and intake want to go...

Look at the NMRA Real Street cars, they have been running low 10s high 9s on stock cammed supercharged combos for years. They also rev these cars to 6500-7000 RPM!

The stock cam isnt HORRIBLE, like it needs to be changed right away, but for a supercharger, and heads and intake, you want to get a cam to go along with the combo, after all its a decent cam but its still stock. Ive heard the Fcam to be very good for supercharged applications, but personally I wouldnt go with a ford letter cam. You can call up trickflow or comp cams, tell them your mods, and what your looking to do and they will suggest a cam for you.

The Ford alphabet cams are old style, not knocking the cams they are proven power makers. Just these days there are a lot better cams out there that can make a lot more power and be less agressive on the drivetrain and better streetability. You should get a cam to match your combo and goals with the car. When choosing a cam everything comes into play besides what kind of heads and intake. The gearing, tranny, diving (street or strip or both) all are crucial in making a cam selection. You shouldnt select your cam because joe blow has a f cam and is putting up good numbers. Call Ed Curtis or Jay Allen or Buddy Rawls if you want a good cam for your motor. Also back to the stock cam, this is probably the best part of a stock motor, as said before there are a lot of people out there making a lot of power with the stock cam, this is the one part that ford didnt skimp on when they designed the motor just my 2....
