How high can u safely rev a stock shortblock with a h/c/i?

Whats up guys? I was wondering how high the stock shortblock can be revved to safely without causing damage or asking for it to explode. I know our rev limiters are at 6250(i never hit it, just what i read) but aren't cobras higher?


Anyway, just wondering.

Blowing the alternator? Thats really odd. I rev my motor to almost 6500 rpms and I ahve never blown an alternator. Depending on your h/c/i you may be making peak power around there...I wouldent worry too much about the shortblock as long as its in good shape. Anyways with the rev limiter you cant spin it up high enough to get into trouble. If you remove that (with, a chip, etc.) then I'd be careful. Honestly on my 306, the valvetrain went before the shortblock went and that was with a stock crank and rods.

I shift at about 6500 and it'll go up to about 6600 in between the 1-2 shift. Is it safe? Hell, I don't know. I've made it home each time I've done it. It can't be too dangerous.

I'm not for sure on a Sn95 Cobra...I would assume it is at the same rev-limiter setting as the Gt model...even with it's gt40's, 1.7 RR's, etc...

The 96+ Cobras (DOHC) 4.6L rev upwards of 7k before redline...different motor obviously...

Back when I was taking my car to open track road race events I would spin it well past 6K constantly with the stock shortblock. I shift the car at 6400 and would often over rev intentionally to avoid a mid corner shift. I would go 67-6800 very often.

And if you check around you'll find that SOME 94/95 GT's have a 7k rev limiter.

Guys, for the thousandth time, the T4MO rev limiter is 7000rpms, not 6250 like every other stang.

With that said, Ford would not have made the limiter so far out of the useable power range of the stock motor unless they knew that the rod bolts, main caps, bearings, and all other fastners were up to the job.

Of course now, 10 years later, the fastners have fatigued and the bearings have worn (hopefully, just slightly). To what extent, I haven't a clue. However, I would not and do not hesitate to spin the motor to 6500-6700. Would I spin the motor to 6700 with a 200 shot? Absolutely not. It's all in moderation.
