If treated fairly good, tune ups oil changes, ect. How many miles are these things good for. I usually deal with the 5.0 motors but i want to buy a 97 F150 4x4 and it has a 4.6 and a 5 speed. Any known problems with high mileage motors or these trucks, it has 128,000 miles on it but is very very nice inside and out!. Just thought i would check in with you guys and see everyones opinion.

Thanks alot!!

I know several people that have 140-160K on them, well maintained, and are still working great. Does the truck have maintenance records? Would be nice to see before you buy.

I had a 97 F150 5 speed with around 280,000 and it still ran great. It had a little puff of smoke on cold mornings and then nothing. It would probably still be going but an insurance adjusted got crazy and pulled in front of it at a bad time and it was totaled. My truck had Mobile one synthetic from 20,000 miles on. I currently have a 97 F150 with about 150,000 miles , auto with no problems.
I think they last a long time.

4.6s will last depending on how well maintaned it is. And also how it was driven. 4.6s on trucks for some reason have a tendency for blowing plugs out of the cylinder heads. So don't be surprised. I would say about 50/50 if you own a truck and it has a 4.6 and you drive it hard, you'll be losing a spark plug, 4 threads in the heads only-bad design!

You can get 400,000 miles out of the 4.6 liter Mustang GT engine if you change the oil every 3,000 miles and if you also maintain your vehicle. It all depends on how much that you take care of your car. Police cruisers go up to 200,000 and 250,000 miles on these same engines. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to get more mileage out of this engine if you take care of it.

Newbie question (sorry): When are you supposed to change the timing belts on the 4.6? I'm looking at a used GT with 75K and he doesn't know what a timing belt is

Plugs blowing out is not a truck thing. the heads are the same as on your car. It happen on cars too.

4.6 sohc have timing chains to be exact.2 of them they go from the cranck to the cam on the top of the head on the front of the motor. You can look at the front of your valve cover and see the rise the makes room for the cam gear.To get to them you have to take off all your front accesories then remove the large y-shaped cover that covers the entire front of the motor.then you can say hi to those long S.O.B

The 4.6 in the F150's are known to often cross the 200k mark or more with no problems, so they are very reliable!
