How much louder without cats?

I just put on a BBK off road H on my 88. Its a lot nicer. Not super loud, but certainly not as quiet. Its not the noise that has me worried... Its the obvious smell of a non catted engine that has me concerned. Removing cats = federal offense for a highway vehicle.
Yeah, but they never know around here. There's no emissions testing in Iowa, but I suppose if I got pulled over by a cop smart enough he could give me a ticket or something.

Yeah... See, I live in Cali. They are smog nazis here.

I went from shorties, catted midpipe and mac catback to the same but with an offroad/no cats midpipe. It was significantly louder but also sounded significantly better. In fact, the 2000RPM drone that I had with the catted midpipe was largely gone with the offroad pipe.

I had a huge post about tickets and o/r pipes a couple years back. Basically I got a fix-it or ticket for $130. I fought it in court and got it thrown out. All I did was snap a few photos of my MUFFLERS to prove what I had on the car. I brought my reciept of installation. Then I printed a chart on the maximum db output on my brand of muffs (magnaflow) which did not exceed the countys tollerance. Judge looked at everything for one minute max and threw it out of court :D I just kept it under my hat that I had no cats which COULD effect the sound output of my Mufflers...MAYBE....:SNSign:

In my experience the off-road h-pipe doesn't make it much louder at idle, but at WOT it's a LOT louder.

My car with LT and an off-road H got much louder at idle. But my car is not even close to stock.
