How much to rebuild a shortblock? Is this all I need?

I found (JpWD40 found...) shortblock rebuild kits on SummitRacing.com for $269. Heres the summitracing part number, FEM-MHP174-000. Is that all I need to rebuild my shortblock? I dont need any machine work or anything right? Just buy that kit and drop it in? Or would it be better to get a low mileage Explorer 5.0 and swap that in?

i didn't check out the kit but if it includes bearings. i wouldn't get it. yes it needs to go to a machinists to get properly rebuilt so they can check clearances, they will bore it 30 over to make sure the cyl walls are straight and true. if they find that the crank need to be reground then the bearings that u buy from that kit would be worthless. if you are looking for a cheap rebuilt i would go with the explorer motor, its already got the gt40 heads. i would put a different cam in it though with your setup.

ermm... if your high mileage I would at LEAST rehone the cylinder walls. I would then check out the crank and make sure theres no scratches or anything out of shape.

I would also buy a new timing chain set.

Would it be cheaper to buy a low mileage explorer engine and drop it in? YES.

Will it cost you a little extra to do a PROPER rebuild and not some barn yard junker? YES.

My engine has 110k miles on it. I dunno if you all read my other threads but my #8 cyl has little compression. It may be a headgasket too, i havent pulled the head off yet. I THINK(keyword think) that if I do this im gonna buy a set of alluiminum cyl heads since im going through all that work of tearing it apart. I figure an explorer motor is gonna be beat on less then a mustang motor, and then I could sell those GT40p heads to get back some of the money I used buying the longblock. Plus then I can use my block to build a 347 while I can still drive the stango. Anyone agree with my thinking or have any ideas?
