Haha I always lube the back of the bearing and also cut the tangs off, it reduces frictions! Maybe he was trying to reduce the clearance for start up? Funny that I can insert bearing without using a mallet, I must be pretty strong!
So for those that do not know, do not lube the back of the bearings! They go in dry and if you insert the tang side first you should have no problem using hand pressure to push into place. You may need a little more pressure for the thrust, but I use a wooden handle of a hammer using constant pressure not pounding.
Years ago I got a Ranger in with a rebuilt 4.0 v-6 that ran for like 30 seconds and then seized up and the dude wanted to know what caused it. Tore the engine down and he had assembled it with anti-seize compound on everything! ...........totally destroyed that engine. What some people do.

He probably isn't doing anything maybe some of the rest of us have done at some point, but the bad part is he has made a how to video so he can teach others to do the wrong things as well.

Joe, you need to watch all 24 videos. You will on more than once ocassion yell STOP JUST STOP. I thought it was a goof at first.
One he puts all the main and rod caps on and then yanks on the crank and says, "yep i can't move it,, there must be no end play." Another time he puts rtv on both sides of a rubber felpro pan gasket. He never checks for clearances on any bearings or rod or main cap clearance, doesn't adjust the rockers properly, installed the push rods and lifters dry, put moly lube on the back of the bearing shells, and pushed on the middle of them HARD with his fingers, torque's half the bolts with a open end wrench on a pipe, never measured for ring end gap or tension, puts pipe sealer on the wrong head bolts, wipes everything down continuously with paper towels, and leaves the short block uncovered for weeks.
It took him a YEAR to build the motor, and never showed it running. I bet it siezed within 5 minutes. if that.
And you are right. The bad thing is he titles his videos as INSTRUCTIONAL.
He could have bought a reman shortblock for the price of the parts he threw together.
I watched one other video. He was showing off his ring compressor, but wasn't even sure on how it worked. Just watching the poor guy made me cringe. I know we all get filthy working on our cars, but he just looks like he is lost. Every time I would see him wipe his hands on his shirt, then touch the bearings or other things, I would think the same thing. Oh well, hopefully he lived and learned.
You dudes need to post comments about the things he's doing wrong. Someone could end up out of pocket big time for following the things in these videos.
The best video is him fitting the crank and bearings. Doesn't everyone grab the crank snout, grab it , and say " that's not moving at all so I'm good" Hell I can tell if my crank moves 3 thousands of an inch by feel.
